From my experience I found the whole process to be a PITA. The fuel filter was one of the many poorly designed parts on these cars. Make sure to be very careful when changing the filter or your interior will smell like gas

Just changed my filter for the first time at 120,000 miles. Quite black but at least no sludge anywhere. Bit of a pain in the butt first time around but will be easier next time since I know what to expect. Getting the housing out of the tank and the top off the filter housing took some work with a small pry tool. Everything went back together very easily with some greased up O-rings. Glad to have a clean filter in there.

Here is the fuel filter for the R50 R52 R53 MINI Gen 1.

Fuel Filter Kit. Part number 16146757196

The ring can be removed with constantly tapping it out. Flat head screw driver works pretty good.

Here is your DIY thread for the fuel filter for Gen 1 MINIs.

Click here for a great how to thread.

Thanks

It's a loaded question, if the filter is clogged or failed, yes it will increase, but if you replace a working filter the only thing you'll just notice is a gasoline smell in the cabin for a couple days.

That said; no filter is made to be lifetime, that goes for fluid as well.

Fuel Filter Replacement With fuel Pump Change

I picked up a fuel filter from dealer a few years ago on a special coupon sale since I figured I would need it sooner or later. My 06 MCS has 68K on it and plan a long drive in June so figured now was a good time for the change. When contacting my local German auto repair shop was quoted about 3 hours for labor, much more time than what I have read on NAM for others that have done the filter change. To try to get a comparison, I contacted the dealer and they said..."lifetime filter" no need to change unless having a problem, which I am not. The first quote from the dealer was $120 P/L ($52 for part), so about 1/2 to 3/4 of hour for labor...this being in line with what I read on NAM. Dealer said they only do the filter change with a fuel pump change, $540-P/L.
Are there 2 fuel filters? The round 5 inch external filter under rear seat and possibly one that is internal to the fuel pump (the "lifetime" filter)?
Is the time others have quoted here (one hour) really representative of the time for a first time change. The thought of climbing in/out of the back seat to perform the swap my self is not appealing, nor would it be pretty sight to watch.
Thanks for any input.

Gary, the pre 03/2002 had the lifetime fuel filter which was a sealed unit and hasn't been in production for a while now. It has been replaced by the serviceable filter (complete unit in Australia is $450.00 + fitting). There isn't a filter in the actual pump. When you purchase the filter kit you get two large gaskets, one is for the filter, the other is for the pump. The reason you get one for the ump is so you can disconnect the internal tank fuel line from the pump to completely remove the filter unit to change the filter. Saves having to struggle to remove the filter unit top to change the filter inside with the unit half submerged in the tank, however, you can do it with the unit still half in the tank. For the extra 5-10 mins to disconnect the fuel line from the pump to completely remove the filter unit makes for an easier job. In regards to the two large rubber gaskets, if it mentions diesel on the gasket, don't worry as its the same gasket or Petrol or Diesel. Just make sure you install the gasket the correct way up. It's about a 25 min job to remove and re install both pump and filter unit ( I did it with a 3/4 full tank and didn't spill a drop).

Edit, Modmini on Youtube has a good video on the fuel filter service for the Gen 1.

BTW, when I got my 2005 a few years back, it had a bad fuel filter gas leak that was caused by a monkey in a garage repair suit. He broke everything in sight.

Be careful, this is not a casual job, nothing needs to get broken but it can. On the other hand, if you pay somebody else to do it, you won't smell like gasoline, but it might not get done right. Your call, but mine has been good for at least five years.

Oh yeah, the replacement rubber gasket does say DIESEL for some strange reason but its not a problem.

Yikes, thats stinks. The seal states diesel buts its a shared seal with other MINI fuel systems. But works.

No......your injectors are still spraying in the same amount of fuel (unless your filter was so clogged that you weren't even getting fuel to your injectors), your fuel pump is just not working as hard to build pressure.

If you see an increase in MPG.....it must be some sort of magic fuel filter you installed
