I just noticed some pretty serious damage to my car this morning, which must have happened when I was parked at a turnpike rest area last night.

Ouch....sorry chrisnl. There seems to be a rash of morons out there who seem to have no problem whatsoever in smashing up another car (...and a MINI no less) and then running off as if nothing at all has happened. What's up with that??? Also, maybe its just me, but I'm surprised the insurance companies want an entire police report on incidents like this. What are THEY going to say that a photo won't amply explain. I mean when people (...the aforementioned morons) do things like this...you've got no information. I had a door ding that happened like this and they wanted all this information that I just didn't have. It was covered and all...I guess they jsut want as much info as is available. Sheesh!!! Hope your repairs go well.
Such a shame!
Sounds like you are working your way through your grief:
1) What!? It can't be true!
2) Why me?!
3) Why that #*@#!!!
4) Call the insurance agent.
Was just driving back to my office from a meeting and heard a really loud CRACK!!! Yep, you guessed it, a big new star crack in my windshield. Much bigger than the year-and-a-half-old one, and likely to spread.
What the hell else can go wrong with this car today???!!!
Now I'm wondering if I can include a new windshield in my repairs and not have to pay the deductible twice.
Thanks for the condolences, everybody...

Chris, here's some good news (in case you haven't discovered it yet)... there's no deductable on windshields in Mass. Assuming you have comprehensive (which if you're financed, you most certainly do) you just go to your friendly glass shop and get a new windshield. No pain at all. I'd suggest a PPG at one of the JN Phillips shops (be sure to ASK for the PPG...they can get it, but mine tried to get the OEM first...which I rejected).
jsun, thanks for the great info on windshields! Very encouraging. I definitely unleashed a torrent of not-nice words towards MINI in the several minutes after it happened. What a shame to have such a great car with so many garbage OEM parts.

This happened to me last month. In PA, if the vehicle is UNATTENDED then nothing is charged against you going forward ( ie. insurance rate increase, etc. ). Unfortunately, they consider it collision damage unless you can show that the damage was caused by a tree limb or something non-collision related. Best of luck with your baby. Jon
