I propose a new test for fame.

From the famous owners of MINIs thread:

I propose the Google test. If you type in a person's name on Google, and the majority of hits on the first page aren't the person you were looking for, that person is not famous. Alan Jackson (another famous MINI owner example) passes this test; Bob Snodgrass does not.

Is this test failsafe? Maybe not- people with really uncommon names may cause false positives (acceptable), and a famous person who has the same name as another famous person might cause a false negative (which is a problem). Any examples, MINI driving or otherwise?

I'm famous! I am somebody!

My name -- meaning ME -- were the first two on a Google search of my name. I have a rather obscure name, but there is an actor with my name as well as a former lineman for the Indianapolis Colts. Eat my dust boys.

ioway- i was a bit worried about that; academics and bloggers have an unfair advantage in a google-based test of fame.

Yes, but in my case it had nothing to do with my job:

1st: internet buzz regarding rumors I was dumping Salma Hayak for Laura
Bush

2nd: my beating the insider trading rap

When I google mdsbrain I get 6,720 results. I guess i'm special.

And I like how it tries to correct the search to 'midbrain'.

I think I understand. Bob Snodgrass doesn't show up on page 1 when Googled. I don't show up on page 1 when Googled so that makes me about as famous as Bob Snodgrass which isn't very famous at all

He is "famous" to people who know racing. But if Britney and Dale Jr. are more your speed, well that's fine too.

This is funny. When I Google inioway the first is my NAM profile, the second is my EBay profile and...ta da ta da...the third is a guy going by inioway posting on Minis of Michigan explaining he's not me. I don't blame him.

I got 12 results http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search. All were actually related to me, 11 of 12 were MINI/Mini related. I guess I'm famous in the MINI world.

I googled my NAM name and I got 33 results all from this website.

My real name is about as common as they get so its pretty much impossible to find myself...

Not famous....

there's an artist with the name Matthew Richter. And there's a reaserch physicist named Matthew J Richter at Davis. But I'm not on the first page at all.

Actually, that's a bit of a surprise. I've written a bunch of articles that have come out in Semiconductor magazines, and done lots of talks that are in conference proceedings, All the articles and the like from grad school and now MC Squared is increasing my spread.... All in all there should be around 200 puplications....

But still no mention. I guess Google is pissed I didn't buy any $400 shares....

Matt

ps, there's a flaw here. Common names will have less chance of being famous than uncommon names. Just dilution effect. If someone were named "Bullwinkel Buttwipe" I think every listing would be for them. John Smith? My last company had three of them working there!

That would be infamous, Batcat, but that's a good thing.

Telegram for the Three Amigos.

"Three Amigos,
Hollywood, California.

You are very great.

One hundred thousand pesos
to come to Santa Poco.

Put on show. Stop.

The infamous El Guapo."

What does that mean?
"In-famous"?

In-famous is when you're
more than famous.

This man El Guapo is not just famous,
he's in-famous.

I googled my actual name and got 1,090,000 results! The first three were me, and the fourth is a topological detail in NorCal! But it was all about me on 4 of the 10 entries on the first page!

When I googled MINIclo, I got 22,900 responses, 8 of 10 on the first page were me.
