Public Servants

Stand up and be proud. How many of us are law enforcement, firemen/women, EMT/Paramedics, Teachers, ect.? If you are on a city, county, federal payroll somewhere, then you are included....and what do you do to relax?

I am a Detention Deptuy Sergeant, soon to be 19 years. I like to go scuba diving when the weather is just right, when it's not, then I putz around in my garden or take Mom to lunch and a movie...and it's always a good time to just jump in the MC and go for a ride. Mick

...just curious. The stereotypes of (police, librarians, etc.) can be so 180 degrees to who and what we really are. When I bought the MINI, my neighbors (who don't know me) said they pictured me in a Chevy Cavalier (or something like that....)...Now, if there was no such thing as a MINI, I would probably have gone for some other vehicle that has a unique outline, but NEVER a Cavalier...Hm-m. Isn't that a bit weird, you work and pay your own salary from taxes? Why not cut out the middle pay and just pay yourself

My view is that stereotypes may have some broad truth to should never be used to assume things about an individual. Here a public sector people I know compared to the stereotypes.

a cop: she (note gender too) volunteers at a domestic violence shelter, has helped others get substance abuse treatment, takes pride she can drink anyone under the table doing shots of tequila, but is also the one to make sure everyone's got a designated driver

a lawyer: despite being a partner at one of the bigger firms here he does lots of reduced or pro bono work for low income and/or screwed up friends. He's also taken on actively parenting three stepchildren at age 60.

a judge: used to moon people on bike trips and still fantasizes about being naked under her robe.

a state university professor (me): gets drank under the table doing shots with women, can't stand all those kids running around at that lawyer's house, fantasize about that judge naked, and dumb as a stick.

I'll bite too Mick. I'm retired USAF and I’m now paid by the government to do contract work for the Air Force.
My few days of free time a year are taken up with vacations at the Dragon in NC or track days of any type.

..This thread can get interesting and maybe, in the long run, cheaper than a therapist... I have to go by the book and strictly by the book when I am at work. Inside there is a nut job just screaming to get out. I sit and listen to the hers's and why, but mentally I am saying "I really don't care why you stole the doughnut..." At the end of the day, when I step off the elevator, look out! Mick

My wife is an EMT and Communications Supervisor for the ambulance service, which is also the county's 911 answering point.

I'm a former police officer and before that was an EMT. Now I "drive" freight trains and pay taxes.

Man, I am tryin but I just love those french fries too much.

Also, that would be dude. Well, not THE Dude since that's his Dudeness Lebowski. I'm just a dude. BTW I also used to be with the military too. In my case it was working for the army in Germany but not in uniform.

Kurt, those are some of the least interesting friends.Probably the most fascination is one who lives in an extendo van who for years has seasonally driven to one of three jobs depending on season. When he visits me he always sleeps in the van even when frigid out. He's a Viet Nam vet and none of us are certain whether he's suffering emotionally from that or simply one of the few true free spirits left.

At risk of hitting a p*l*t*cal topic, he's very dependent on VAMC care. I hope they keep providing it. What's with new copays and restrictions on services previously provided? Vets seem to be just about the only public servants we keep thanking...well, at least in words.

I work for the EPA in water programs....all of 'em. Lots of scientists and engineers around here. I'm the odd-ball communication design specialist so I get to mix it up w/ all these folks which is great fun. There are three MINI owners in my Division.

I will say that I have been very impressed, having worked here for 9 years, with the level of dedication among staff in our Regional office. Oh sure, you have a few who want to sit back and enjoy their government job, but overwelmingly these folks are very hard working, conscientious, and almost insanely concerned about proper use of taxpayer dollars.

Being in the artsy side of things, I'm awarded extra eccentricity points which I put to full (and productive) use. Being a MINI owner therefore comes as no surprise.

Are you saying this goes against my stereotype of college professors? Cause that is pretty spot on.

And flora, is your MINI currently in the blue and red scheme? Very unique and cool.

And I am not a public servant, but I am on unemployment right now so does that count?

Thanks for your service.

The description of me as a professor was meant as self-deprecating humor only. Since this thread is meant to stand up for public servants, and especially as education budgets are being slashed, I feel a need to say how impressed I am with the people I work with, whether faculty, staff, or students with assistantships etc. I like my job mainly because there are so many cool people. How could I not when I'm dumb as a stick and they put up with me.

I'm probably the lowest paid Gov't employee here! I work for Fulton County School System, Georgia. I am the clinic assistant at my daughter's elementary school, I work 10-12 days a month(I share the job with a girlfriend) and I'm off for the summers, YAY.
I'll go back to the "real" world when my youngest gets to high school.

See public servants in Quebec/montreal area are the MOST frowned upon. When i say public servants around here we mean goverment workers which are highly paid with low skills workers.

It is my firmest belief that EMT, Firefighters, Police etc should all be paid 1.5-2 times their current pay VS giving these 1000s of goverment workers a nice hefty pay.

the worst by far however is montreal city workers. they are so heavily unionized you cannot touch them unless you Veeto current city laws and kick them out.

I praise every public worker which does good for the benefit of the citizens of a city. You guys put your lives forward for someone elses and for that, i commend you

True to my calling, I will answer in the form of a quiz.

I am a professor of

a. Corn Engineering
b. Swine Sciences
c. Female Biology
d.none of the above

OK, that was too tough. You'd never guess. It's none of the above. Let's try again.

a. Neuropsychology
b. Sociology
c. Clinical Psychology
d. African American Studies
e. Sndwave Studies
f. Religion/Philosophy

Right now, I too am unemployed for the rest of the day. It's Saint Pat's (sndwave) Day and people in green at a bar I passed were calling.

Would you believe it is e. sndwave studies? Though an emerging discipline we actually have competitive admissions due to numbers of students wanting the major. He is humble on NAM but if I told you "his" name you would understand. The degree leads to lucrative work in what in Hollywood is called "The Biz".
