Static electricity, MINI, and Electric People

I have read other threads about MINI owners who get shocked every time they get out of their car, but this is getting wierd. Maybe its unrelated, but that is why I am posting in Off-Topic. I had an 02 MC and never got shocked, no problems. I then bought a 03 MCS, and it started shocking me every time I get out of it. Thats not too wierd as I have heard others say the same. I thought maybe my diamond plate floor mats had something to do with it. I then noticed that it happens every time I get out of my wife's car too. Didnt think much of it.

This past month or so though, I get shocked about once an hour, whenever I touch anything metal or turn on a light. Its freaking me out a little, and the shocks are getting stronger and more often. Its very wierd. Its happens with different shoes, different clothes, no similarities in circumstances othe than metal or light switches that I can see. I even have wood floors. I seriously thought that maybe it started when I started wearing my hair in a fauxhawk, but I didnt today and I just got shocked twice. Does this have anything to do with my MINI or was it coincidence that it started at the time I bought it. Am I like the guy from the movie Powder or the girl from the animae Ark? Is it my mother planet trying to contact me?

So I typed "static electricity and people" in a search engine and this was one of the first matches: Electric People- http://amasci.com/emotor/static1c.html and http://amasci.com/weird/unusual/zap.html . I dont feel that wierd anymore, but I hope that i dont turn into a full on Electric Person. Funny thing is the guy who wrote this is in my neighborhood and wants people to experiment on. Sounds creepy to me.

Well enough rambling, anyone who reads this will now think I'm insane. I guess if no one hears from me I was probably zapped into the sky by a lightning bolt or something. And if that happens, no, you cant have my MINI, I'm leaving it to my dogs. Signing out.

I don't think you are insane, at all, The MINITOR! I am a Reiki Master and when I motor down certain streets/boulevards, all the street lights blow out as I approach them! No kidding! This has happened for about 12 years now. It's "funny!"

Do your dogs have DRIVING licenses?

Hm... That sounds very odd. I have never gotten zapped in my MINI, or any other car.

I'm with you. I get shocked nearly every time I close the door when getting out. I've taken to closing the door by the base of the window, just above the door frame to avoid it.

I'm thinking about attaching a chain to the frame of the car so it will be grounded, what's an extra rattle or two in a MINI

Be careful when getting gas, avoid getting back into the car while you are filling up so that when you grab the handle to pull the hose out of the car you don't ignite the gas

I'm terrified of touching metal things in general during the winter. It's not so bad in the summer as the air has more humidity, but anytime I get out of a car I touch it with my elbow first so it won't hurt so bad. One day at work I was complaining about it and my boss laughed at me until we were running an experiment in the dark and I touched the door frame and a 5" spark flew out of my finger tip and scared the bejesus out of him. My favorite was when I touched a high voltage generator (for an x-ray tube - not a high voltage substation) and I shocked it and I could see the voltage reading change significantly.

Whenever I get out of El Kabong, I cover my hand with my sleeve before I close the door. I didn't even realize I was doing this until my daughter pointed it out!
My brother is one of those people who can't wear a watch, they just go haywire in a matter of days.

I get zapped every time I get out of our Honda Odyssey and most of the time getting out of the MINI. I also screw up radio waves. Some contractors working on our house bought a new radio because they thought theirs was going bad. It was me walking around downstairs causing the interference and I messed up their new one, too. No one else caused it, no matter where they walked. I've had portable phones not work for me while standing right next to the base while they work for other people anywhere in the house. And worst, while staying in a cabin on Lake Ontario, all I could reach was a cell tower across the lake in Canada with our old, analog cell phone while other people could reach the local cell tower in Rochester.

Maybe I'm channelling Nikola Tesla.

You are a funny guy.

By the way my user name here is just for the color, but I have always been shocked by cars. I think I have gotten so used to it I barely notice anymore.

I don't think the MINI is any better or wose than other cars I have had.

Also I have never thought that this was anything unusual or particular to me. I still don't think it is anything unusual.

I didnt think the car was too wierd, it was the addition of the hourly metal and lightswitch shocking that got me thinking, along with the fact that it is winter and my condo is not carpeted. And probably the strangest is that I keep shocking my 3 chihuahuas. The two males dont think much of it as they are kind of rowdy, but my female yelps every time.

Interesting and entertaining thread. As for me, I've never been zapped by my MINI... but whenever I drive my Father's Lumina I always get zoinked as I close the door upon exiting.

I swear that Lumina hates me!

The only shock I get from my MINI is how happy I am everytime I get in and motor.
Because of my MINI, I found someone, I give him an extra rub on the dash

I counted last night. In 2 hours I was shocked by my metal shelf twice, lightswitches twice, and I shocked my dog 3 times. I decided it may be something about my condo, because at work I dont have the problem so much and my dog has crazy static hair sometimes too.

Oh man, you are not alone. I've been electrocuted a number of times last week getting in and out of my Mini. It friggin hurts! People look at me kind of weird when I grab my door handle and instantly jerk my hand away and start swearing... I saw sparks the other day when my hand touched the handle!
When I go fill up with that high test fuel, I have visions of that gas station inferno the bad guys died a firey death in at the end of the chase scene of that great 60's, Steve McQueen film, "Bullet" . :impatient

When we picked Jenna up in Arizona, we got shocked at least a dozen times a day!

Do you wear all cotton? If any clothes are plastic related, that conducts electricity better. MINI seat material, plastic everywhere, not much metal, low humidity, I don't really know. I occasionally get zapped... touching the door as my foot touches the ground helps.
One time I was at a friend's house, he said to take a look at his computer... oh wow he never had THAT happen before! I made his computer crash by walking over closer!
Watch it during refueling!

Right on! I think its all about what you wear. Cotton sweatshirts - no problem, nylon jacket - major voltage!

Hate to burst your bubble Clover, but being something of a streetlight maintenance expert, I expect they are high pressure sodium discharge lights. End of service life for those bulbs is manifested in the light cycling on and off. They go on until they heat up and the voltage across the lamp drops too much and then they go off until the lamp cools down again. I had one circuit of about 30 lites last week that had at least 15 cycling. Kind of like Christmas.

I guess Poco is just to laid back. I've never got a shock from him.

Hey Ran, I got one of those at the end of my street, care to come up and fix it for us, Hydro does not seem to care

Sure, I'm game for a junket. Now all I have to do is talk the City into letting me take the bucket truck that far.... and spring for the consderable amount of diesel fuel!

No need for a bucket. It's a wooden pole, just bring your climbing spurs

Cool. Be there first thing in the morning. I need the practice, it's been over a year since I climbed a wood pole.
