The "bands people haven't heard of but should have" thread
If you know of some good bands that are out there, but never got to be "big" (never really on the radio much), name them here and tell us a little about them. I will start with a band called "Ned's Atomic Dustbin". They play a lot in England, but did tour the US quite a while ago. I think they have 3 albums out. All three are pretty good in my opinion. In addition to a guitar player, singer and drummer, they have 2 bass players, which is cool (or maybe I just think so since I play bass). One bass player plays higher, melodic stuff and the other plays a regular low-end bass line.
Wow, I love Ned's Atomic Dustbin!!! One of my favorite 90's bands, especially their album "God Fodder," which I have foisted upon so many people that I've lost count.
Hmm, random others that come to mind...
Ween - my favorite band, utterly indescribable really, since they are so versatile and use so many styles. The guitarist is amazing, the drummer is amazing, the lyrics are often juvenile and tongue-in-cheek misogynistic, and the songwriting is phenomenal. They're great live, too.
SIANspheric - a really cool Canadian sort of noise band, lots of layered guitars, unusual production, understated vocals, and great songwriting. got into them way back when I was into Smashing Pumpkins in the mid-90's, and I'm still a fan. They're still making records, too.
Quintron - they have a really great album called "Are You Ready For An Organ Solo?" that is one of the best party albums I've ever heard. Sloppy, lo-fi production, lots of energy, great organ, just an all-around great time.
So many more, but I'm hungry... off to lunch!

Brother Trucker. They are an alternative country rock band in the Wilco vein. Really tasteful quitar work. Also, the singer, Andy Fleming, writes songs about as well as anyone in that genre.

I too remember Ned's Atomic Dustbin, they had a hit when I was in highschool. Don't remember the song though.
Chris if you like Ween then I don't know if you've heard their side project the Moist Boyz. It's much hevaier stuff. I like the album with the boyscout on the cover.
My favorite style of music which I'm not sure what it's considered (drum & bass usually with female vocals, trip hop) whatever it is I just call it pretty. But not pretty in a sappy way. It's just downright good music. All of these bands come HIGHLY recomended by me. I have some of them in MP3 format if anyone wants a listen just PM me. One of my favorite hobbies is turning people on to good music.(I worked at a record store for 3 years)
Baxter, Hooverphonic, Portishead, Esthero, Massive Attack, Morcheeba,Dredg, Apex Theory & Sneaker Pimps
Waiting to go see Dream Theater in a couple months. They're not really underground or anything but they don't get much airplay. Probly cause their songs are about 15 minutes long . They were awesome though when I saw them on the "Gigantour" co headline with Megadeth. Good old 80's metal with some prog rock. I hate labeling but that's the best I could think of.
Atom and his package - One guy and a synthesizer. Really hit or miss, but I love him. Saw him live in grand rapids and it was an awesome show.
I love that guy, too! Unfortunately he's not playing as Atom & His Package anymore. I have one CD of his that kind of sucks, but another one is so, so great! It starts off with a song called "I Am Downright Amazed At What I Can Destroy With Just A Hammer."

Yep, I love their stuff, and I have all three albums. The one you mentioned is my favorite. I'm definitely hesitant to recommend them to anyone, since the lyrics are so completely offensive. My favorite lyric is "If I didn't have a wallet, I wouldn't have an ass." Whatever that song is with the chorus that goes "Good morning America, are you feeling high" kicks ass!!!
Those of you who might like some of the new folk music that's gaining in popularity, Devendra Banhart and Iron & Wine are two suggestions. Great, mellow, catchy and sing-along music but its much more interesting than just acoustic guitars. Also Calexico is very interesting.
i love Fiction Plane. lead singer is Joe Sumner (Sting's son) and his voice sounds a lot like his dad. the Music is great, seen them perform 2 or 3 times, once at CBGB. look them up on the internet their first album Everything Will Never be OK was awesome!! i've hung out with Joe, Seton, and Dan before after one of the shows and they're all really cool to boot!
Well ,the reason I started this thread is that I just now got around to listening to "Brain Blood Volume", because a friend of mine had gotten it and said it wasn't any good (even though I loved "Godfoodder" and "Are You Normal". So I bought it cheap off Amazon a few months back. I finally stuck it in the cd player in the MINI last week and it hasn't been out since! I really like it!

oh! forgot to mention O.A.R. great band too. pretty well known but not really "Crazy Game of Poker" is one of their more popular songs. everyone should check them out too.
ooohhh... I like their sound Thanks for the link. I'll have to pick up their CD.
Here's a group for you guys... Inspiral Carpets. A band out of Manchester in the early 90's. They have a unique sound... a lot of 60's keyboard, a bit psychedelic, considered British pop... I have all of their CD's. I even have one on vinyl.

Been following Porcupine Tree for well over a decade now. I think they
still qualify as sparsely known. Started out as Steve Wilson's pet home
studio project and a ficticious band, and continue to evolve/tour/change
with each release. Earlier stuff is like what Pink Floyd should have been
doing, and they've added a bit more intensity and metal flavor over the
last few years. I currently like their latest: "Deadwing" the best.
Anyone else listen to them?
This dish ain't for the faint, people with heart conditions, or pregnant women. You must be this tall ~ to ride. It's homegrown from Dragon country and gauruteed to either send you running for your life or begging for some crackers. Use a spoon, use a straw, or pick up the bowl and slurp. They don't care! :impatient

BrainBloodVolume is one of the most underrated albums ever. It's too bad, N.A.D. were just starting to strike out in some really interesting new directions when they broke up.
Someone mentioned Calexico - they are a perfect example of a band that is criminally unknown. My favorite album of theirs is called "Feast of Wire" - really, really great stuff, with the same kind of universal appeal as Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot."

Chris Whitley. To my mind the most innovative rock, blues guitarist since Hendrix. Feel free to disagree, but not until you've listened closely. A poet as well. Sadly he past away last November. A tremendous talent who deserved far better than he received.
I can't believe I didn't think of Townes Van Zandt earlier - he's one of my favorite singer/songwriters, who never really made it big, although Willie Nelson had a hit with his song "Pancho & Lefty." Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago.

Imogen Heap - outstanding talent saddled with the poor category of "Electronic". Just saw her live in Ferndale and she is the real deal. Amazing.
Carolyn Leonheart - Incredible jazz singing talent, sang back-up on the last two Steely Dan Cds
Boy, I'd say more but the new manager of WDET has killed all daytime coverage/programming of local Detroit music. Thanks a ton, you %&$^%*(&(&%#@!
