OK, so I finally joined the cult ... My wife bought me a new 20GB iPod for our third wedding anniversary. I had bought her a pink iPod Mini last year. I figure I'm not comfortable enough with my sexuality to borrow it from her for my use.
I underestimated how difficult it is to actually fill this thing with music that I would actually listen to.
So what's playing on your iPod? Here's what I have uploaded:
Pink Floyd - The Wall - Live
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
John Mayer - Heavier Things
Lenny Kravitz - Baptism
Thievery Corporation - Mirror Conspiracy & The Outernational Sound
Velvet Revolver - Contraband
Zero 7 - Simple Things & When It Falls
In a world where computerized gizmos are constantly getting more and more powerful and capable of storing more and more information, I just cant understand why people want to downgrade the quality of their audio recordings with compressed music files.
I'd rather listen to a SACD or DVD-A that is MUCH higher quality than a CD than listen to an mp3 that is lower quality than a CD.
Maybe its because I don't like sticking anything other than q-tips in my ears?????

I do agree that it's disturbing that the iPod has about a 70% market share in the portable music player market!! That's ridiculous
What do you think it is about the iPod that has made it into such a must have gadget? Is it it's usability and design? Or is it the perfect pairing with iTunes allowing you buy music?
I forget what their sales projections are for 2006, but it's something ridiculous.
Since installing an iPod in my car, I've hardly used the radio or the CD player. The sound quality is CD-like since the compression software only removes those sounds that are inaudible to the human ear anyway. Plus, you have the convenience of having nearly your entire CD collection with you as well as the ability to download an individual song or album in an instant and play it. A six-disc changer in the boot seems pointless when you have over 1,000 songs even in an iPod Mini which I have (actually, it currently has over 1,100 songs on it at present). Plus you can take it with you when you travel or park for security purposes so you don't worry about loss of equipment or your CD collection.
I was hesitant at first but once you try it, it's hard to resist. The Apple product is outselling the competition due to its design, fit and finish and really intuitive control (the single click wheel is really easy to use even on the go and the screen is completely legible when you use the backlight).

I too share your preference of high quality audio recordings. The iPod is all about convenience. Depending on the quality of the conversion/compression, the audio quality does not have to degrade much (if at all, at least audibly). The iPod (and to be fair, quite a few other high quality mp3 players) has a decoding and amplification section that is quite competent in delivering decent reproduction. While an iPod might not become your source of choice connected to a high-end stereo system, it rocks as a portable music source. Smaller than a portable CD player could ever be. A 60mW headphone amp that drives the headphones quite well. And in the car, it does not have to be any worse than a CD being played in there.
And it sure beats lugging around 300 different CDs.

As usual - Greatbear is right on the money.
That darn bear is ALWAYS right on the money.
I certainly do understand that my dog is the only member of my household that is close to qualified to hear an ultra high quality SACD or DVD-A recording.
I'm still not PAYING a dime (or 99cents) for any mp3 recording though. I wouldn't even steal one!
Maybe one day someone will give me an ipod and I can transfer some of my own stuff to it and then I won't be bitter that I don't have one

Many good comments in this thread. It really is all about the convenience for me. I travel a lot, and never having to decide which dozen or so CDs to bring is pretty liberating. I also like using the shuffle play mode most of the time - that way my iPod is like a really good radio station without ANY chatter, and with a really big playlist! (I have about 2400 songs on my 15 gig iPod, and still lots of room.)
Also, iPods can be used to listen to uncompressed .WAV files, if you're really sensitive about distortion. They take up way more space on the drive, but the choice is there. Personally, I've aged out of my "golden ears", and find MP3's pretty decent. I chose to encode mine at 160kBps rather than the default 128kBps - this seems like a good compromise of compact storage/ good fidelity.
What's playing on my iPod right now? "spirits Drifting" by Brian Eno. This from an obscure album from the early 70's that I probably would not think to bring on a trip with me, but here it is, a nice surprise on my iPod. The song before that was "Baskets" from Cake's recent Pressure Chief album, and coming up is a brand new song I got from the iTunes music store: "Don't Stop" by Brazilian Girls.
I haven't yet ordered my MINI (Looking like it might happen soon), and I plan to order the iPod adapter. I can't express how good the iPod is.

Bell X1 - Music In Mouth
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Louis XIV - The Best Little Secrets Are Kept

I love my iPod. It has many wonderful attributes, but it's quite possible that its best attribute is the fact that its convenience "prompts" you to listen to stuff you wouldn't otherwise listen to, if digging through a mountain of CDs or albums were the prerequisite. Of course, I've got 17 GB of songs loaded, and goodness knows I invested some of the best minutes of my life loading those songs up -- minutes I WILL NEVER GET BACK. Aaaaargggghh! It was well worth it though.
What's on my iPod now? I was most recently listening to Ludacris and Beastie Boys but am feeling a bit Pink Martini, so that's where I'm headed next...
p.s. No need to thank me for not showing you what 17 GB worth of artists would look like pasted into this thread. It sure is fun to see other folks' lists though!
Why's it gota be an iPod huh? Why can't it be a Rio Karma?
I have mine hacked and have something like 8800 tracks on it. I couldn't go a day without it! Best $ ever spent. It plays different formats also.
MP3 (we all know how crappy this quality is. need at least 192 vbr to be good)
WMA (blah)
OGG (128k mp3 size with 192 vbr quality. freaking awesome if you ask me )
FLAC (lossless compression. about 2-1 over WAV)
WAV (duh)
Maybe some other one, but that is plenty for me!
Oh, to answer the question. New Slightly Stoopid album is what I've been jamming to. And Dashboard Confessional. And Jack Johnson. And a lot more...
Haven't made the leap to I-pod yet but have had a great time making MINI Road Mixes on MP3 cds in the HK. Seems to be all I need right now because I can burn to my desire....an all Floyd or Dave Matthews drive etc. 10hrs+ of music per disc.
This isn't a hijack of this thread just a plug for the MINI HK mp3 player which I think is a great alternative...and since mp3 is data...no skips.
Alright...I admit probably 6mo's from now I'll have an I-Pod and wonder how I ever lived without one
Anyway no desire to pull the conversation away from I-Pod...let the thread continue
Useless for you, maybe. Not useless for me and a million other people. Why do you think you're the only market?
And Greatbear is not always right.
You snobby audiophile types miss the whole point. First, a true audiophile listens to vinyl, not CDs, unless they're of the enhanced type. Second, while MP3 at 128k is nothing to write home about, it's not bad if you're not a sound snob or anal-retentive listener. Who can be an audiophile in any location other than a special environment? I mean, just how good does anything sound in a car, at work, or on a flight?
The ability to discern the difference between this set of $3,000 speaker cables and that $3,400 set is a curse not a blessing. You listeners who get off picking fly **** out of pepper are sad souls, IMHO.
The main point of the iPod, for me anyway, is music, plain and simple. I love music so I can enjoy it when I want. And, the latest AAC compression format is pretty damn good, much better than MP3. The new iPods allow other formats as well.
Lastly, a music library that does not contain Level 42 or Delerium is no library at all.
From Apple's web site:
In numerous comparison tests, AAC comes out on top. Check out these impressive results:
AAC compressed audio at 128 kbps (stereo) has been judged by expert listeners to be “indistinguishable” from the original uncompressed audio source.*
AAC compressed audio at 96 kbps generally exceeded the quality of MP3 compressed audio at 128 kbps. AAC at 128 kbps provides significantly superior performance than does MP3 at 128 kbps.*
AAC was the only Internet audio codec evaluated in the range “Excellent” at 64 kbps for all of the audio items tested in EBU listening tests.*
I'm not a guy who likes to simply "go along with the crowd" but the fact that when I leave home I can grab the pod and listen to it in the MINI through the stereo (and safely control it with the MFSW), pull it out and listen at work, and then put it in my pocket and listen to it out and about made it a no brainer choice for me. I highly doubt anyone can tell the difference between an original CD and the iPod while buzzing down the road with the windows open, and super charger screaming. If they can, they I would suggest they invest in a better sport exhaust instead of a better music player.
