I know there's some digital camera afficionados on NAM. I'm looking to upgrade my 2MP Canon PowerShot S110.

I like that camera, it has decent features, but the poor thing is falling apart.

I wanna stick with Canon, and go up to 4 or 5 MP. I want something with a decent zoom too. (I acknowledge though that these point and clicks are limited in that regard).

The Powershot product line is dizzying ... Can anyone recommend a certain model.?

The nice thing about this camera is the ability to take RAW format imagesG5 not as fancy as you can get but better then most out there. The next step up will almost double the price. This camera is not released yet canonpro1 the rest of the higher end cannon cameras have removable lenses which in some cases will cost you more then the camera.

I bought a 6 mp Fuji Finepix F700 off dell.com, its really nice - has many features of an SLR... but its in a tiny point-and-shoot package. About $400. Only downside is that it only shoots in 72 dpi.

I shot over 1000 pictures last year on an A70. It was pretty good, even took some long 20 second exposures at night. At times I wished for both a longer and wider zoom, but for $299 it was hard to beat. The A70 is still available, as is the A80 4MP version.

You can make prints of your photos up to 11 by 14 with a 4 MP camera with very good results. If it were me, I wouldn't get a P&S digital camera with more than 4 MP, simply because you'll be paying money for MP you most likely won't use. For a 4 MP P&S you're looking at less than $400.

Now, I would get a 6 MP D-SLR, but not so much for the MP, as the lenses and the ability to have a lot more control over your photography. Minimum cost is $1000 for the Canon Digital Rebel with the accessory kit lens. The Nikon D70 runs $1300 with the kit lens. After that you're looking at Canon 10D territory and that's $1500 just for the camera body.

So, P&S 4MP (< $400 ) or D-SLR (> $1000)

That's my $0.02

And to add to Dave's comments...which I completely agree with him on...based on your criteria, you can get an s45 or s50 for under $400. Several Sony's from the DSC-P line are in that range too. But if you want to stick with Canon...gosh, I'd recommend those. I'm extremely happy with my s45. I don't feel too limited although I will step up to a DSLR next. It's a fun camera and the 512MB card I have with it obviously rarely fills up.

My fiancee won a Canon S400 in a photo contest. Camera is pretty nice, takes great stills. Movies look good on the LCD but terrible on TV/monitor.

I got a canon digital rebel and am pretty dang happy with it....haven't even had it for a week yet but you couldn't pry it out of my hands. Still getting used to the controls and all the features but here are my some photos from my first two days shooting with it.

DiD - the 10d is actually a Canon not a Nikon - the Nikon next step up over the d70 is the d100.

I just got an Olympus C5000 Zoom at BestBuy for $399, with a $70 mail in rebate. (Effective price $329)

5MP, Lithium battery (big deal for me) and 32mb card included. I love it. Has all of the manual settings I'll ever need, and a 3x optical zoom.

I like it.

I don't even know how I wrote Nikon 10D instead of Canon 10D.

As far as the D100, from the features comparisons I've seen, the D70 is more of a replacement for the D100, rather than a decontented D100 (like the Digital Rebel is a "limited" version of the 10D).

YellowMiniS - sounds like a great deal! I agree, a lithium battery is essential to make digicams a sensible financial investment. They go thru battery power at such a clip that you need high capacity and rechargeability, and all the others go to crap fairly quickly, except maybe NiMH.

I'm looking to upgrade to a 4 or 5 MP, but I'm not willing to spend much over $300 for it. I'm willing to wait a year for the prices to continue to fall.

Does anyone have an informed opinion on the Kodaks? So far they seem to be themost reasonable price-wise. The only brand I'm ruling out so far is Sony - I'm done buying their crap.

dave - yea the d70 is more of a d100 replacement in many aspects...where as the rebel is more of an entry model, the one big advantage that the d100 has over the d70 is the availablity of a verical grip - there are some people working on ones for the d70, but not nikon and the aftermarket ones doesn't seem to have the same fit and finish that the nikon or canon direct ones do. Once you shoot with a veritical grip you will wonder how you got by without it. I was very very close to getting the d70 over the rebel - but decided canon is the company I want to invest my money in lenses in....nikon has some great ones - but the number of IS or tele zoom lens are much more limited...and apples to apples the canon lenses tend to be a bit cheaper....though i'm still anxious to get my hands on a d70 to mess around with it.

One thing I think that makes a big difference on the point and shoot cameras is the hand grip - like the Canon G5 or Kodak DX7630
or nikon 5700. In my opinion makes the controls and everythign alot more useable and your hand feels at home...I'd recommend going to best buy or somewhere and comparing ones with a hand grip vs one that is perfectly flat....a camera that is great but doesn't feel good in your hands won't allow you to get the most out of it. Also I STRONGLY echo Dave's link - before anyone buys a dig camera i suggest checking out dpreview.com! You can also do a nice side-by-side comparisons of different cameras there as well as read VERY in depth reviews of them.

I am seriously considering purchasing a Fuji S7000. At 6.3 MP is has just about everything I think I need. It even takes rather good quality video too! I was reading reviews all day today about this camera and most owners seem to be very pleased with it. Noticed the camera listed at just over $500 on newegg.com (and there's a mail in rebate for $100 off until 6-30-04).

Has anyone had and experiences with Fuji Digital cameras, good or bad?

I have the Fuji Finepix 4900, which is the granddaddy of the S7000. They look almost alike, but the S7000 is 3 generations newer with many improvements. I love the Finepix which takes beautiful shots and the colors are terrific.

IMHO this is the best camera for the price/features. Go to THIS website for more info on the S7000

I bought a Nikon 5700 a year ago, with a 2 year extended warranty... have no problems with it at all but am thinking about taking it back this weekend, complain about some problem with the camera, and exchange it for a new one. And since they just released the 8700, same camera but 8 megapixel instead of 5 meg, and has the same price as what I paid, I'll just get the newer better one.

Gotta check to see if they have it in stock and make sure I have all my stuff together before going in.

Had to hunt this thread down...

I actually ended up getting the PowerShot S500 as a birthday gift from my dad today

I went right to Sam's Club and picked up a 256MB flash card. Gonna spend some time today fiddling around with the camera.

The PowerShot S110 served us well. Time for it to spend the rest of its life in my shoebox

I picked up a Sony Cybershot DSC-F828 the other day. I had my mind set on a Fuji S7000 but I got such a good deal on an out of the box F828 that I couldn't pass it up. Had a chance to use it on vacation this past weekend. Still need to learn how to use all the features in order to improve the photos.

This should come in handy at the Dragon.
