If we can have a thread about addiction to lipbalm, maybe it time to see if there are any other guitar addicts among us.

If I were as good a player as I am appreciater of the instrument...I can only dream. My fetish (and it is) is for acoustic steel-strings.

Favorite one I actually own: a 1953 shade topped Gibson CF 100. It is a rare model, but a higher grade LG2 with a cutaway. It's also got good mojo because I bought it from Greg Brown, one of a small number of folkies whose actually managed to make a good living writing and singing.

What I'd love to have: a pre-war Gibson Southern Jumbo. Just holding one once it had the best feel of any I've ever strummed.

Any other guitar addicts? If so, what do you play and what would be your ultimate one to have?

I play an Alvarez acoustic almost daily, although I had a bit of an off year this year after breaking my ring finger on my left hand; I still can't play for very long without it starting to bother me. I don't know enough about guitars to covet one in particular, but the Guilds do seem particularly nice. I've also always liked the handmade Mexican ones with the abalone inlays/rosettes...

My first guitar was a Koga acoustic nylon-stinged instrument from Japan, which was a knock-off of a Goya, a great Spanish classical guitar. I took up the guitar as a fun instrumental break from playing classical music on the piano.

I used to have a BC Rich which got stolen out of my car years ago.

We have 2 acoustics, 1 twelve-string acoustic, and I got Lizzy a Fender Stratacoustic for Christmas (along with a new amp)

I have a Washburn D-10. It's a working man's acoustic.

I'd love to have one of those Fender models with the blond wood finish and the black pick guard, like Springsteen uses. I'm also a fan of the Gibson SG.

I play an 1980 Ibanez Artist series electric. It's a great playing guitar. I'm thinking of getting back into an acoustic guitar again. There just happen to be a guitar builder where I work that can build me one. Now if my cash only matched my dreams.

I play a Fender Strat and a handmade Mexican classical that used to be my father's in the early 60's. I have yet to play another classical with a sound to match this guitar. It has the deepest, richest bass tones I've ever heard.

I'd like to get my hands on a Martin steel string and a full metal Dobro too, as I'm into playing slide blues a lot.

Gotta save money..

>>I just purchased a Peavey (my first guitar!!!) Don't know a thing about playing one but I am going to try Hope you can teach an old (39) dog new tricks.

I've been playing for 5 years so the "I just started" excuse is wearing thin. But what I am almost universally told is practice every day.

Added to that is not to let frustration stop you. To that end, two of the most supportive things I heard came from pros after house concerts at my place. One told me to keep in mind it's not a competitive thing except with myself. If I keep practicing and improving at whatever pace I'm able, all's well. Hanging out afte another concert, the guy was trying mine out then thrust it at me saying he wanted to hear me play. I played the "I suck" card. He just looked at me seemingl sincerely confused and said, "So what? Don't you enjoy playing? Just play"

Oh man the only thing I buy more than car parts is guitar gear! I have a 91 Gibson SG in cherry stain and a 95 Rickenbacker 360 in the clear center with cherry outside edges. I would like another dean acoustic. And some day a Gibson Les Paul, 2 Fender Telecaster one hollow body and one solid body. And of corse an amp or two to go along with my Marshall that is all customed out. Bogners are a great amp! I look at guitars at least once a day. It’s an addiction just like speed (driving fast that is).

Thanks for the support inioway. I haven't even told any of my friends that I bought a guitar for fear they would insist I play for them. I am having a ball playing with it though. I'm already up to my fourth chord!!! My cats like listening to it so I can't be that bad.

I play and sing occassionally with some local bands.
I play my guitars and don't treat them as well as I
some do and maybe I should.

I have a 1998 Martin D18V which I love. It has a
Thinline pickup installed. I have a 2001 Epiphone
Casino (Black) which I use with jazz groups and for
Beatles numbers, etc.. I have a Goya Spanish guitar
that I hardly ever play. My son plays bass and my
daughter is just learning, so they have guitars also.

We have a music room filled with all the amplifiers
(mostly Fender) and electronic stuff to shake the
house down.

Music is beauty all by itself. But music with your kids
is something I can't even describe. It's my favorite thing.

God speed.

I hear you brother.

I love acoustics, preferably vintage Gibson.

I have two electrics, both foreign made Fenders. One is a Stratocaster, the other a Fat Strat, my fav (in midnight wine color and light wood neck, oooooo). I keep my baby plugged in to a digital pedal set and the trash fender amp it came with. It sounds good to me though a few of the amp adjustments have ceased to exist. I've been eyeing a vintage American Telecaster at the local shop. But think I'll get a banjo first.

Banjo... Mmmmm... I've been thinking about picking up
a ukulele. Last time at Elderly (Lansing, MI) I tried out
a few, and I think the music room needs one.

And I got to say this about my son the bass player-- He's
a good student and has really learned his music. He'll be
much better than I, maybe already is.

God speed.

ooooh, Elderly Instuments. I've been tempted to drive to Lansing just to go there. I love cruising their used and vintage website. They are also so honest in describing them to you. A friend bought a used Collings OM3 and was shocked when he got it. The guy on the phone said it was one of their better ones, but it was clearly a gem even for the always good Colling line.

It may have been Clapton that said he thinks Fender strats are the perfectly designed guitar: fit your body well, basic enough, but with all that's needed. I love telecasters too though.

Yeah!!! A guitar thread! I've been playing music forever. Played classical violin since birth, then started playing guitar in highschool...

Lets see... I love strats. I have 2. A fender strat+ and a beat up, trashed out but sounds awsome '79 strat. Also have a telecaster. A couple of el cheepo acoustics, another el cheepo 12 string. What I'm playing the most these days is an ibanez 7 string. Absolutely love that guitar. Beautiful action. Neck as flat as a 2/4. (almost as wide too). It's pretty much my number 1 guitar now. Kinda weird... a couple of years ago, the only guitars I would play were strats...

Dream guitar? ESP!!!!!

And speaking of sons playing, my six year old is starting to learn guitar. I have no doubts he's going to become a MUCH better guitarist than me! Yeah!!!!!

So what guitarists do you guys like? I'm a HUGE yngwie nut! Maybe it's my classical background but there's very few guitarists that can match his technical and musical abilities... Let's see... who else... Al Dimeola, John Petrucci of dream theater... did I mention Yngwie Malmsteem?

Guitarists I like? Stevie Ray Vahn and Jimi Hendricks.

Dream Guitar? I keep seeing these new bands using acrillic-bodied (see through) electrics. Don't know how they sound in person but they sure look cool.

One of my favorite guitarists is Rick Nilson from Cheap Trick. Also love to listen to George Harrison play. The lead guitarist for Collective Soul is AMAZING!

It's hard to narrow, but acoustically Richard Thompson and Peter Mulvey whose lesser known but does incredibly nice stuff, using crazy alternative tunings song after song. Also, for historical purposes, a guy from Trippy's neck of the woods an unlikely comibination of a white Minnesotan old blues guy, Dave "Snaker" Ray. His 12 string blues was an early influence on The Stones and other 60s Brit Blues bands. When he was still in high school Bob Dylan used to come to Snaker's house to hear old blues records he'd found. I was lucky enough to know him the last 1 1/2 years of his life. The classic story: others got rich learning from him, but in the end, he had trouble getting bar gigs outside Minneapolis. His last instrument was a Taylor 12 string with a Black cat's femur glued to the headstock in homage to blues lore. An incredibly cool man whose hilarious rants on his website outdid anything we've ever managed in our forums. A particulary funny one was his reaction to St. Paul deciding to use 9 volt batteries to power parking meters given that he knew professionally they go dead under cold temperatures. Oh, and he and his wife decided he was going to play until he died. He managed even though he had to be helped into his chair. Cool cool player and person.

Nice story inioway.

Elderly is definitely worth the trip. There are many good
guitar stores, but these guys really stand out. They will
let you play ANYTHING! You can take a vintage $30k
Martin off the wall and no one hovers over you. Pick out
a new one you're interested in, and they'll give you a
music room to yourself, and bring you DOZENS of that
model to try out. And the place is just an old school
building-- very earthy, very cool. Oh, and if you find
something on the web you're interested in, they hold it
for you until you come in. AND I've gotten some very good
deals there. I think I just talked myself into another trip
to Lansing!

God speed.

2 years ago my girlfriend wanted a guitar for xmas so bad and she thought her parents would get her one for xmas and she didnt get it, so I spent a month and a half researching guitars so I could get her one for Valentine's Day. By the time I had one picked out, i was so into it I wanted to one for myself but I never pulled the trigger. So im not a guitar addict anymore but I was one for a month? I liked the Seagull S-6 but the mrs is a little bit smaller so I ended up with a Taylor Big Baby.
