I have both an Olympus C-5050 and a Canon S230, the latter which I got from amazon.com for 299 bux. For the price it is tough to find a camera which combines the rugged construction, feature set and flexibility in such a small size. The picture quality is first-rate. I highly recommend it.

A good site for nice reviews and highly used forums for digital cameras is dpreview.com - tons of great info on there...before buying a digital camera I would strongly recommend checking it out.

One has to be careful in discussing zoom, because "digital" zoom is pretty useless and should never be one's criteria in selecting a camera. Optical zoom is what counts. Digital zoom is nothing more than cropping out the picture leaving the center portion, thus making it look like one is zooming in on a subject. The only camera with a 10x optical zoom, as far as I know, is the Olympus. The Fuji FinePix has a 6x zoom. Almost all others have 3x. So there...
Unless you're shooting 6x or 10x zoom with a tripod, you're inviting camera shake and unsharpness. Not even at ISO 800 setting.
I have a Canon S110 and it takes great pictures...of things. The size is great as it fits in my pocket so it goes everywhere but I have yet to solve the "red eye" problem. I have heard it has something to do with the flash being so close to the lens. Oh well, it is still fun and handy.
I have a Canon A70, was $299 last July. 3 mega pixel, 3x zoom. Some of the reviews claimed it had faster response time than the other 3M digital cameras. It also has quite good battery life. Of course this information is 6 months old.

Red eye is the result of the flash light bouncing back from the inside of your eyeball. Can't explain the red color though. Do you have a flash adjustment for red-eye reduction? Most digital cameras do.

Yes, the flash on a camera is bright enough to cause a reflection off of the retina, the red color that you see is from the blood vessels nourishing the eye. When you have red-eye reduction, a flash may go off before the picture is taken to contract your pupil, then a moment later the true flash/snapshot goes off and the blood doesn't show as clear.
