Last Tuesday I got an invite to play basketball with the guys at work. I got to the gym and played for about 10 minutes when I blew out my knee. I went to Patients First that night and they weren't sure what we were dealing with. Now it is over a week later and no signs of healing, so I went to an orthopedic doctor who confirmed my worst fear. A torn ACL. No motoring for me for about 2 months :(. Grrrrrr
Ouch! I'm sorry to hear of your injury Jeremy. Hopefully you can at least "ride shotgun" in the passenger seat? Will you be in one of those ice-water casts for awhile? My brother went through that last summer, he was pretty stir-crazy by the time the cast came off. Hang in there, the MINI will be waiting...

Right now all I know for sure is I will be having surgery once my swelling goes down.
My wife just got the same bad news. We only have two manual transmission cars, the MINI and a 128. The doctor told her about a month before she'd be able to shift again. I guess I'll be renting her something automagic to drive for a while.

They are letting her drive? Must be her left knee?
It's been a month since I tore the ACL now, and surgery is quickly approaching. 10am Friday morning I will be going under the knife to have complete ACL reconstruction. Then we will have a rehab cycle that will hopefully get me back behind the wheel in ~2 weeks.
My boyfriend's knee had an impromptu meeting with the underdash of a Town & Country when it had an impromptu meeting with the broadside of a Ridgeline (someone pulled out right in front of him). Doc thought his quad tendon was torn but it was just messed up pretty good. That was 5.5.09 and he's walking without crutches now. It still looks a little funny - the worst of it is the clotted blood that's taking forever to go away. But he's pretty much back to normal, just gets sore when he works really hard all day. PT helped him a lot.
So I'm sure you'll be fine. Everyone I know who's had surgery said it heals faster when it's actually separated and put back together.
Jeremy,
Take it easy on the knee . I know you are ready to motor . Baby steps at 1st . You will heal fast . I have a friend who blew out both ACL's and he is doing fine now . He was a young dude and he healed fast .
My brother just had ACL surgery done about a month ago. He's doing pretty well, healing faster than I thought he would. One key was a BIG recommendation to do pre-op therapy to speed up recovery...I hope you did that...You DID do pre-op therapy, right?
I had 3 surgeries on my left knee, but not ACL related. More like a problem with tendons and ligaments, requiring arthroscopic surgery. Doing OK (Last surgery was like 9 yrs ago), but my knee has been acting up lately, I need to have it checked out again, hopefully it's nothing serious.
Good luck!

*Doc was shocked I was/am in so little pain that I didn't take any of the pain pills
*Doc was amazed how to little swelling there was
*I am tired of sitting around
*Doc took some x-rays, and he said everything looked good on them
*Physical therapy starts Wednesday
*Stitches come out Monday
Doc also said I can start to drive as soon as I can comfortably bend my knee to 90˚. After PT Wednesday I should have at least a bit of an idea of how far I need to go to get there.
I can bend my knee to 118˚ (of an estimated 135˚.) I can straighten my knee to 8˚, goal being 0˚. My therapist was very impressed with my range of motion 4 days after surgery.
I'm glad to hear of your great progress! Let pain be your guide as to what you can & cannot do, push to a mild level of discomfort but don't let the testosterone & adrenaline tach you up in the redline pain arc. Slow & steady will win this type of race. Here's to motoring & shifting down the road; wishing you all the best.

I cant drive for 4 months because of my knee surgery. I have had 4 so far, I got 2 acls (dbl Bundle) in RT KNee from a Cadaver and most recetly I recieved fresh Cartilage from a Donor so Its a little life altering at best.
Anyways, I have accumulated many things for KNee care. Of such thing is a Cryo-Cuff, (go ahead Google it) It works Wonders!!! Let me know if you would need a complete set up.
Good luck healing,do you Physical Therapy religously and do not be quick to ball it up again, mine broke mid stride same game.
I had to sell my Coopers and now drive an Automatic.
On the pos side its a X5 Xdrive 35D

Just got back from another PT session. My straightening is at 6˚. My therapist is amazed at where I am. He said that most people are stuck around 15-20˚ in the 1st week after their surgery. Next session is Monday morning after I get my stitches removed.
Just got home from another round of therapy, had a sub-therapist today (Monday's is my guys day off) and he was also shocked by my progress so far! I also had a doctors appointment to get my stitches removed. Doc said I can drive when I can walk in the immobilizer with one crutch, which he said could be as early as Wednesday. As long as I work at it.
I used to play softball as an adult. I played baseball all thru school, mainly in the outfield where I could chase down gappers and throw to the plate from just about anywhere.
I began to experience pain and tingling in my right arm and fingers and a doctor told me that I needed surgery on my right shoulder if I wanted to continue playing. Or I could exercise, give up trying to throw guys out at the plate and thereby avoid surgery.
I chose the latter! But if it were a knee, I would have probably had the surgery. But I would have fought the temptation to get back in the game.
Your body will tell you what you can and cannot do. Listen to it!
Yesterday at PT they were making me do some stuff that I was super scared doing. They had me stand on only my one leg (the repaired one) and balanced. It took about 5 minutes of convincing that my knee would be ok in doing it. Sure enough, I lifted my left leg and nothing bad happened. Then when I went to see my surgeon for another follow up he took away one of my crutches and told me to walk. Again, it took a good while of convincing before I did it. I took a big step, which didn't work very well, so I started to take little tiny baby steps and that was fine also. He told me that I am able to walk with out any crutches, but it will take some time before my head believes him. I am getting a custom mobility brace later this week, which I think will help me mentally. Since it comes with a 'no re-tear guarantee.'
You'll be good in no time...It always takes your mind to convince your body that it's feeling better and you can do it. One of the balancing acts they used to make me do when I did surgery was to balance on the rehab leg while on a mini trampoline, and the PT would bounce-pass a ball to me, and I was to catch it and bounce pass it back to him. That was pretty interesting...Then again, my surgery was different (Lateral Release of the Tendon), but the therapy was killer. And I did the surgery 3 times....
If you want to see, some pics from the 3rd surgery:
The brace I wore, with the cooling pad under the wraps and connected to the ice box that kept my knee cool:
