This is a perfect illustration of why pre-op PT WORKS! Everyone should take note - if you have an injury (knee, shoulder, whatever) that requires surgery, ask for PT before you have it, if possible. Having strength and good ROM going in makes a huge difference on the other side!

I wish I knew/was told this when I had my surgery done...I was never told to do the pre-op therapy, and I pai dearly in post-op therapy. Last time I did any surgery to my knee was before Y2K though...

I got my custom brace fitted today. I've been walking around the house with one crutch all day. Its amazing how much this thing helps to jump the mental hurdle.
I am now cruising around with just the one crutch. My leg is starting to get some strength back into it. It feels so good to be mobile again, even if its not totally mobile.
Just got some AWESOME news today. I'm now allowed to walk without the aid of any crutches! I'm so excited to finally free. Tomorrow would have marked 2 months of crutches. I still have another month or so before I am free to go back to work, definitely going stir crazy here.
Oh no. Its been 15 months...but I am about 75% sure I re-tore the same ACL yesterday. I was turning around in my living room when my knee popped out of place (which its been doing a lot lately.) But this time it didn't go back, and now my range of motion is going to crap, I can't bare weight, and when I move it the wrong way I get some seriously sharp pain. No no no no!

Sorry to hear about all of this. If it is any help I manufacture medical devices just for this very thing. Our website is here:http://www.arthrex.com/ and we have a nice set of animations to show what is going to be done and how to fix it. That is here: http://www.orthoillustrated.com/
If you have any questions, I am no doctor but I might be of some assistance. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I made a doctors appointment with my surgeon, have him take a look at it and let me know what he thinks. Sadly, that isn't until 11/17, so I have some time on my crutches without an answer.
Doc wanted me to schedule a pre-op appointment for this week, so I got one for Wednesday. I got a call while at lunch today saying that they want me to have surgery Friday. When I told them when my pre-op was they said they were going to reschedule it for me. They are in one heck of a rush to get me under the knife this go round.
UConn, do they have you on PT, and if so how long do they recken' you'll be doing it?
so let me give you as much insight as i can. there are two types of surgery, a partial menisectomy and a meniscus repair. with a PM they cut out the tear, recovery is a few days on crutches and then full weight bearing with no limitations, limited if any PT. If they do a MR, its 6 weeks no weight bearing, then partial for a while then full, all the while being in PT for 2-3x per week. i expected to get a PM but when they got in the tear was so big that to remove it they would have removed 75% of my meniscus so he had to repair it. so i went under anethesia expecting 2-4 days recover and woke up hearing 6-8 weeks. I am at 8 weeks now and it still hurts when i walk but i am full weight bearing, just no running, jumping, squats, etc.
also you should know going in that MR are only successful about 60% of the time. the reason is the meniscus has no blood supply so there is nothing bringing healing 'factors' to the area. They actually drill and cut some nearby areas when they do a MR to get some blood to the area and hope it will cause the repair to heal....

hows that for some great news
Thats the most information I've gotten on the subject yet. I haven't seen my surgeon over this issue yet, and won't until he comes in the day of surgery in the OR.

then you have the wrong surgeon and maybe the wrong practice if he is with a group. thats pretty ballsy to plan on cutting into a guys knee and not meet with him beforehand to explain everything including what i said, how he treats his patients post op (knee immobilizer), etc

id find another ortho
This is the same guy I had with my ACL. He is a great doctor, not sure why he is rushing the surgery this go round.
do what you feel comfortable with. i would never be comfortable with someone who hasnt gone over everything with me,
good or not, there are many good surgeons out there.
if you need more insight, im happy to help. my next door neighbor had the same surgery as me with a slightly different post op procedure than me, two different docs with different ways to handle the post op time. for example, i was allowed no weight bearing but wasnt in a knee imobilizer. she was allowed to weight bear but was in an immobilizer.
I had this surgery too, and it took almost 2 years before I was completly pain free......but I imagine I'm quite a bit older than you guys so that could have had something to do with it.
However, the thing that bothers me is the knee popping out of place he mentioned before. My understanding of how the knee works, the meniscus has no bearing on the knee "popping out", it's only the cushion between the joints....
I'm no doctor, I'm just going off of what my doc told me and the photos they showed me of mine...but I'd be concerned about the knee popping in and out of place after ACL surgery.
So how you doing now?

Into recovery day 2 and still pain/med free. I believe they cut the tear out because he told my girlfriend that the meniscus was shredded.
As far as the popping out thing, I have no idea if that is a menisci or an ACL, or just a completely random issue. I will say though, when I did the meniscus tear it had the same feeling as when it would pop out of place.
Today I started putting my foot down as I move around with my crutches. I am allowed to weight bare, as tolerated. So, so long as no pain comes from it, no harm no foul.
