After living in the past for too long, I've decided to look for a digital camera. I'm not a hardcore shutter bug and am not looking to spend more than $300. I just need something decent. Probably mostly be used at car shows, races and me screwing around otherwise. I've been looking at this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....#productdetail
And have heard a lot of good things about it. The one drawback I see is that Maria Sharapova does not come with it. Any opinions or words of advice?
^^^I hate Worst Buy, Radio Shaft and Suck-It City also but I also prefer being able to walk into a store if I have a problem with it. WB hasn't really done wrong by me (yet) other than some of the workers are idiots. It's probably where I'll end up going because I work a mile away from one and I almost pass it every day.
For the kind of digi-snap kind of camera you're looking for, just go to Costco. We got a little Olympus camera that does a great job, for around $200.
Go at least 5-6 megapixels. Zoom, built in flash.

Note that Olympus (IIRC) takes a make specific memory card.
Wifey got me a Canon Powershot A710 - it's a good little camera, and should be below $300.
But I'd still take the model that Maria DOES come with.

I actually have the predecessor A710IS. It's easy to use but still has a full complement of advanced modes. It also runsCHDK which means you have access all sorts of neat programs and features and can shoot in RAW should you choose.

Nah, standard xd card for the little digi I'm talking about.

hemi, be sure to check out Pricegrabber to make sure you get the best price. Also, I believe when you buy digital cameras from Costco, they automatically extend the factory warranty to two years.
I have a little Olympus Stylus (forget the numbers...740? it's a couple years old) that I LOVE and it takes great pictures for what it is. I think it was around $250. Great bang for the buck, and I'm a crappy photographer so it's not worth it for me to spend much more than that!
If you can be OK with mail order try www.bhphotovideo.com. It's a NYC super store that has excellent prices and very good service. It's where most Nat Geo photogs buy and have their gear serviced and takes up a block of the lower west side-I was there last month and it took everything I had not to go heavily in debt.

+1, this is where I got mine. It's also a great place to just call and ask questions if you're not quite sure what you need or want. They'll help you spend your money wisely And the prices are great.
I own a Canon PowerShot A620. It's a great little camera, between the point-and-shoots and the SLRs. You'll love digital, I shoot over 1,000 pics a year, out-of-the-question with film.
in this day and age, most brands are fine. you cannot go wrong with pentax, olympus, samsung, panasonic, canon, nikon, etc. each camera/brand has its quirks/features. most are 8 mp or higher at the moment. 6 mp (mega pixel) is more than adequate for 4x6's and 8x10's. 3x optical zoom is the minimum you should consider.
the canon elph is very compact/pocketable. oly stylus as well. so's the small nikon. so go to a big box store, or better yet a local camera shop, and hold in yer paws to see it how it handles for you.
don't forget to get an extra battery (good deals on amazon) and memory card.
