There wouldn't happen to be an exterminator as a nam member, would there? We have a gazillion ants. I swear I think they are coming from our stove. (A sign that I don't cook enough? )I have watched the trail, and they are going from the bait back to the stove. Nothing from any doors or anything. I think they are odorous ants, but I'm not sure.
They are driving me nuts. We had to throw away a whole thing of cat food (the expensive organic kind) because they had gotten in. We even keep it in a screw top container. I won't eat anything from our kitchen because of it. I went to take a drink of my coffee the other day, and it had already fallen under assault. Is it possible they are nesting in the stove? What can we do?
Welcome to Fall. :impatient
(Next time) don't throw away the cat food. Wrap it in a garbage bag and the little bastards will suffocate soon enough. Ask me how I know.
Odds are there is a gap in the floor or wall. Just this AM I was crawling in a closet, plugging the gap of the incessant hordes with caulk.

If your infestation is that bad, Dianna, you probably just need to open up the checkbood and hire a professional exterminator.
In fact, as bad as you *think* your problem is, it's probably a whole lot worse. For every ant you can see, there's probably another 20 that you can't see, hiding in your walls, cupboards, floors, etc.

Boric Acid works really well. But you need to take care if you have little ones or pets in the house. Sprinkle it where you think the ants are coming in or congregating. Can you pull the drawer out from under your oven (if you have one) to see if there are ants under there?

The boric acid and sugar water mix ... put in an old flat plastic lid along their path will draw them in, and then they DIE!!!! Once they know it is there you will see a stream of them come for it. Gross .... but it works.

They also don't like cayenne pepper...burns their little footsies. MUWAHAHAHA!
Sometimes I attack by spraying them with good ol' Windex, then leave a few carcasses around to send a strong message back to the nest. They come and carry away their dead, then usually split.
I have no idea how much that would cost. Any guesses?
Not sure. I have a contract with an extermination company but it's only for treating outside the house eight times a year.
I think your cost will depend on how bad your infestations turns out to be and how many return trips they need to make to rid you of them. Call around tomorrow morning and get some price quotes. Some companies might give a flat rate to rid your house of them, regardless of how many visits it takes.
I think we're living on top of the ant world's version of Manhattan! My other 11 neighbors have the ongoing problem. We have a pet who gets into lots of spaces and is really curious, so we use Terra traps on top of the counters where Jack the Little Thief cannot reach, Orange Guard around his cage and the floor and the kitchen counters. Orange Guard is safe for animals and people, but I'd be careful if you had something like a pet mouse! The ants will swarm the Terra, take it home with them, and DIE!!!!!
Put the pet food in a ziplock baggie in the fridge. The ants fall to the bottom, dead, and you can strain them from the food.
I HEARD, but haven't tried it yet. . . my disgusting sons are looking forward to THIS experiment: Flax seed. They apparently love it (ants, not my kids) and will eat and eat! Then they explode.
Good luck!
Luckily for my sons, there are ALWAYS more ants around!

We've also had issues with LOTS of ants this year.. We tried for weeks to get rid of them ourselves - bought all kinds of ant killer - sprayed around the perimeter of the house, etc. etc. That lasted about 2 days each time - then they came marching back again.
We have 3 kitties so poison has never been on my list to use for anything... but we finally had to give in when the little farts starting coming in through the electrical sockets - Yikes!!!
Nothing worse than a HUGE trail of ants early in the morning going straight for the 3 kitty dishes - ewww ewww ewww..So Mike finally gave up and we called a Pest Control company. Here in our area, we could not find a company that would come out and do a 1 time spray. So we HAD to sign a year long contract.
They came out for $55 and will come every 2 months for $55 unless we have issues in between - they will come out again - at no additional fee. So far, we are ant free - Yayyyyy!!!!

Oddly enough, some ants don't like mint! We used to keep mint planted around our garbage cans, and the ants were never a problem.

You can also spray the trails with Isopropyl Alcahol. That will take care of the trails but not the nest. Sounds like time to call in the professionals!
I have The Bugman come out 6 times a year to spray around the perimiter of my house. A couple years ago I had to finally call. I moved the cats out for the day and let him go at it. It has worked so far,,,
I really do like ants. They are really cool! - In fact, I wrote a little poem that I will bore you all with now:
DEM ANTS
I sees a trail of tiny ants across my kitchen floor.
I likes the ants when theys outside - but not when theys indoors.
And so I gets my can of RAID and gives their trail a spray.
And as they little bodies twitch, my eyes they looks away.
And then I gets my vacuum and plugs it in the wall,
And sucks they little bodies up - right off the kitchen floor.
And as they bodies sail away I says a little prayer,
O, Lord, please keep dem ants outside and don't let dem in here!
Sometimes I attack by spraying them with good ol' Windex, then leave a few carcasses around to send a strong message back to the nest. They come and carry away their dead, then usually split.
It actually worked. There have been a few stragglers, but it's definitely helped.

Our ants must have been mighty STRONG ants - LOL!! Because we tried Windex too - it lasted about a day and back they came - darn it. Keep us posted if the Windex does it's trick with your ants...

I was snacking on Krispy Kreme donuts and milk. The milk almost took a spraying leap out of my mouth onto the computer screen. It's time to go to bed I do believe. My night is now complete. This comment just made my evening. Thank you!
I use a chemical that I purchased over 8 years ago called Diazon. I think that's how they spell it. It's no long on the market, surely because it actually works. I had two huge bottles of this stuff when we moved to this house about six years ago. I swear that this neighborhood was built on an ant farm. I'd never had ant problems before.
I purchased these bottles to use in my older home when I heard that a neighbor had a bad roach problem and was moving out. I didn't want those critters marching over my way. Used it then and never saw the first roach.
I use this stuff about once a year and don't have ant problems, but all my neighbors do. I've had a few of them admit to me that they'd love to break into my shed and steal my bottle for their own use. They feel that having their debug guys out a few times a year is just keeping these pest at bay and not killing them. Little to say my stuff is under lock and key. The Hubby isn't even allow near it. He used it about a year ago in our ditch area to keep the mosquitoes at bay. I could've rung his neck. How wasteful. We have the only chemical know to man that actually gets rid of ants and he's wasting it on mosquitoes. He doesn't even hang around outside. What was he thinking.
So when my little magic bottles are gone, I'll be trying all the advice you've been receiving here. :impatient
Hmmm...now try sprinkling some cayenne pepper on them and around the areas they're interested in.
And for all of you folks who are having pest control companies spray around the perimeters of your homes and in your gardens, I just want to warn you that they may be carcinogens which also play havoc with human cell function.
My step-grandfather and his daughter (my mother's half-sister) both had such a service spray their gardens on a regular monthly basis, and both ended up with the same rare brain cancer, which killed them. My grandfather died about 11 years ago, and my aunt, died last year in August. We believe that the exposure to the chemicals definitely played a role in their illnesses.
Diazinon is a VERY carcinogenic pesticide. Just remember that many of these poisons kill us, too. Try using as natural a solution as you can. Even making a spray out of chili peppers (cayenne) can work. Be careful with chemicals...they are dangerous.
