We put down a small deposit on a Cayman S today, so we can snag a build slot for September (possibly earlier).

We ordered the Porsche today and left a large check at the dealer. A july (sometime) build with a projected delivery date of 14th September.

We settled on Sapphire Blue. We considered the Mahogony exterior, but looking at them head to head the blue was better. Inside we settled on agate grey/pebble grey, and Cathy added some touches of brushed aluminium. We went with PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung, dual clutch auto), we drove both transmissions to make sure. One of the cars was considerably more raucous sounding, either the other was not a Cayman S or the sports exhaust is much too loud for my liking. We weren't planning on the sports exhaust anyway.

As well as the PDK with the big flappy paddles, the go faster goodies we ordered included the carbon ceramic brakes (PCCB), I hope they work on track for us. On the street they're supposed to last for just about forever. There's also the Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), not only does it have a real limited slip differential, but it'll brake one of the rear wheels to assist turn in. Its traction control to make you go faster. We opted for the sport suspension, which is conventional suspension, firmed up and lowered, not the fancy electronic dampers. Finally there's the sports chrono package, this gives you the Sport+ button which is basically a track mode (which the dealer will ask you not to put on for a test drive), with PDK you get faster shifts and launch control (as well as a few other goodies).

For comfort and convenience we opted for the 18 way adjustable (with memory) seats, which are both heated and ventilated (we could do without the heating, but its a package), the dual zone climate control, and the uprated audio system with iPod integration.

In a streetable car I would look at
911/997
Vantage V12
M3
C7
.... Looks like I'm listing out the TUDOR series GT cars

Track only: not a lot of two sweaters out there, but lots of choices like the F2000 car that has the full body option so you can run both a Formula and Prototype style car.

What ever you decide I'm sure you will have fun...

Motor on!

Opps, to late you have the Porsche on order, I'm sure you will enjoy it... I drove one a few weeks ago... I didn't get it because it wasn't available in Chili Red.

We get SS with the Elise and the GT3s, the Vettes were banished to AS. We're going to give it a go, but I doubt I'll be able to make up the PAX disadvantage over HS. I want to try out the launch control at a pro.

its funny to me, watching guys with $20+k dumped into STI's trying to keep up with stock Caymans. nice color! good choice, probably the single best track day car out there right now, aside from a ZR1 or GTR...

We finally got the Cayman on track on Friday, I did one of my usual (long) write ups, you can read all about it over at Planet-9: http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-b...fun-track.html I did manage a faster time (1:52.5), but then slowed down to work on doing it properly.

That's a beautiful car, but something like that would seriously have me never finding it's limits. I would just be too afraid of balling it up, to ever take it out on a track. A 2006 and up Z06 is a great start to a race car, fairly cheap right now and easily replaceable.

LS is on my bucket list to run with my Viper, I envy your experience.

Bet that car or one like it is much cheaper than a c6z plus some reliability mods for track. Hell of a lot safer too. If you start looking at dedicated race cars you can buy a lot of speed for not a lot of money.

Watched this thread since it showed up, I think you have made a good call on the Porsche, very versatile platform stock with a lot of race history from the brand and still chosen by a lot of casual track and canyon runners. Both forgiving and knarly, I have only had a half hour on the wheel with one and that left me wanting more. I held off commenting earlier because I don't have the options you obviously do, but I was interested in your original post because I have done a 1:40 at Laguna on a Ducatti years ago which still stands out as one of my memorable "bucket list" moments in my life. Have fun.

Jesus Btwyx, I am having a vicarious thrill just considering your dilemma.

My two bits says the Cayman - need a co-driver?

Cheers,

Charlie
