Android Phone + AUX: Terrible Sound Quality? Help!
Hi All,
After much searching and re-searching, I have still not found a remedy for the problem I am facing:
Ever since I got my mini ('12 MCS Hardtop), I have not been able to play music through my android phone via the AUX cable. iPhones—through the aux—seem to work just fine, delivering great sound quality. However, when I use my android phone, the audio quality goes to sh*t. (excuse my language, but this problem is driving me nuts).
I have tried changing AUX cables, I have switched through multiple music services, and I have adjusted and swiveled the cable endlessly in the 3.5mm jack, all to no avail. The sound is always bad: the tweeters constantly hiss, and there is a super weird inconsistent crackling that occurs. The sound never cuts out, it just persists in delivering really, really bad audio. I tried playing with the "aux-vol" setting, but it did nothing to help.
If any of you knowledgeable mini-gurus can provide any insight, I would really appreciate it. The Harmon Kardon speakers sound terrific on the radio setting, but I sure would like to listen to some of my own preferred music from time to time.
Thank you!

first time I tried an iPOD thru the AUX on my 7 it sounded horrible, but I knew someone with the same setup and it sounded fine
I played around with the volume out level on the POD and the AUX input level on the head unit (one of the settings in the radio) and was able to balance things out. I think I was getting distortion from the POD cuz it was trying to run at max output. Boosting the level of the AUX in the radio allowed me to drop the iPOD level and things became fine.
Could be same thing and perhaps the default level of the ANDR' differs from an iPhone . . .

Hi,
What other AUX cables did you try? I had the same problem when I used a 4 pole cable, but a 3 pole worked fine.
AFAIK, Apple's AUX (the 3.5mm male-to-male version) has 4 poles and their wiring does not conform to the industry standard.
Here's an article that should give you some insight into the matter:
