No worries. It's there if you (or anyone else) gets a moment.

It's more there because it was mentioned, not only by you, that I need to wire one or the other. In my mind that isn't the case, and I am just trying to rule out whether I am bonkers (it's possible) or whether I did a poor job explaining what I have done.

Was I correct in that with the voltmeter I need to be checking between the battery and the ground and then the ignition and the ground? Just want to make sure I am testing properly as I have only minimal experience with this sort of thing.

Really quick, just kinda scanning the video, it looks like you are not getting the proper power to the Pioneer head unit.

Take your multi meter and making sure it's on DC volts run it across your battery, positive on one side, negative on the other. Make sure you get voltage.

Now go to the front of the car, find a bolt in the door jam, this will serve as your ground. Now check your ignition and battery wires in the Pioneer harness. These are usually a red wire and a yellow wire. You should get 12 volts on one wire with the ignition off, and then 12 volts on both wires with the ignition on. If you don't you'll need to check your connections.

Also, on both my R50 and R53, I needed to run an ignition wire from the fuse box to the radio to get ignition power. This wasn't provided by the factory on my cars. So, you may not have the correct power wire hooked up to the reverse harness that you installed (this is the harness you replaced the cracked one with).

Let me know what you turn up after this and I can try to help you more from there.

I get a clear 12v reading when checking the battery under the hood.

When I check the lines grounded to a bolt on the door jam I do not get a reading on either wire

I also went ahead and clipped the battery line (red/brown) so I could test the line directly (without my replaced harness being in between) and I don't get a reading on that either.

Sounds like you aren't getting any power... I'd check fuses next to make sure none are blown.

All of the fuses would be at the bottom left of the driver's side, right? Or am I looking somewhere else?

I'm not sure where they are located on the R50 but it should be on your owners manual if you have one, if you don't I'm sure that you could get it online

I'm not sure which fuse you are looking for lol I was just letting you that there are more fuses under the hood (fuse box) besides the one inside the car by the drivers side footwell, you are looking for blown fuses right? On the cooper S there is an extra fuse box under the hood and one inside the car but I'm not sure if the R50 has and extra fuse box under the hood I imagine that it does but who knows, your manual should tell you.
The members above should be able to help you further with you issue I'm clueless about all of the other steps lol

Checked the manual. The manual essentially points to their location (it only spoke of the bottom left driver's side).

Removing the cover there is a key showing which fuse goes to what.

The radio fuse looked perfect. Just in case, I replaced it. Still no reading on the multimeter.

Your link above refers to the passenger compartment. Is that written for the right-hand-drive vehicles? As far as I can tell thre are no fuses on the passenger compartment (left-hand-drive USA vehcle).

There are a total of 11 wires...

The wires on the harness side that are not connected:
1) Brown - labeled "MUTE"
2 Brown (a second one) - Labeled "MUTE"
3) Brown/Red - not labeled
4) Orange - labeled illumination
5) Blue/white - labeled "AMP TURN ON"

In terms of the rewired harness (that I am plugging into the back of the stock unit) there are two wires not connected to anything (because I do not have the HK system).

EDIT: are you able to tell me where wires 13 (blue/white - AMP TURN ON) and 14 (Orange - ILLUMINATION) are supposed to connect on the Pioneer plug?
My mistake, I went and checked the wiring harness of the pioneer that you have (DEH-X6600BT) compared to mine (DEH-X9600BHS). You do not have an illumination option in your headunit. However the blue/white wire on the pioneer harness should be going to the power antenna/pin 13 of the original harness.

The 'alpine' diagram I was referring to was the first diagram that you linked of the factory unit (titled: Mini Single Slot CD Head Unit).

From the rest of the discussion so far this doesn't sound like your greatest problem though, good luck!

So... progress...

Turns out there are two fuses I needed to check. One was blown

Stock unit now works, however it does not turn off when the ignition is turned off. I can also power the unit now without keys.

The pioneer unit is still not receiving power.

Check you wiring more slowly. Build a wiring diagram. It sounds like the IGN is either backwards or shorted or missing.

Can you help me understand how the IGN can be backwards? It is pin 16 on the harness.

The r50s and r53s I've seen do not have a true ignition wire.

Run a wire from a fuse that only gets power when the ignition is on. Connect this wire to the ignition on the pioneer head unit.

Try this. It should work.

I also had the same issue when I reinstalled my stock head unit in my r50, it would power on whenever.

Ok. I guess this is promising. Unofrtunately I don't even know where to start with running a wire from a fuse.
I guess I would need soemthing like this:
