Navigation & Audio Disc Read Error

Disc Read Error
I am getting a disc read error message on my 2005 convertible. Previous owner said he cleared his information and that it needs to be rebooted? Took it to a dealer for a convertible top recall (useless) and asked them to use a different DVD to see if its the disc or the drive. Dealer said they did not have an extra disc lying around. (HA!) They said I'd have to pay the $200 for a new disc if I wanted to try it. I asked if the disc would not read could I return it. No response.
Anyway, is it possible to get beyond the disc read error screen without having to buy a new disc?

I assume we are talking about the navigation? The Mk4 laser can get weak. Yu can try a CD map for a Mk3. Note the CD and DVD lasers are not the same component.
You can also replace the optical drive mechanism for about $90. Look up your symptoms on the BMW e46 and X5 e53 forums.

If we are talking about the navigation then yes a CD map will work. To replace the drive mechanism you just pop the lid and unscrew the drive, disconnect the cables and swap in the new one. There is a DIY with part numbers on the BMW sites. Search google for MK4 laser replacement or similar.

I ordered 65 83 9 241 764 from from bavauto.com for $112 but they sent me a DVD M3 3.5 drive which I think is 65839237706
hi, if you want to replace the DVD Drive (65 83 9 241 764), all labor is about those steps:
1. extract MK4 from its location and remove blue and (kind of) purple connector from behind - AFTER power led comes (and remain) off (about 30 - 40 sec)
2. open top case with a little help from a screwdriver (no screws at all)
3. remove (only) top 4 screws that lock dvd drive in place (TX10 as i remember)
4. gently extract dvd drive from mk4 case then remove 2 ribbon cables (one easy, other a bit tricky...have a lock)
5. connect ribbon cables to new dvd drive then put dvd drive back on case
6. put back screws and top case, put blue and purple connector back then reinsert mk4 on it's place
7. drink a beer and enjoy your well done job (along with an almost new mk4)
P.S. total labor time ~ 10 min

This procedure is described on the BMW TIS DVD and is file RA 65 90 550. The dealer parts guy could probably print it out for you. That is if the dealer is helping you. The project is very easy. Be careful unlatching the ribbon cable plugs.

One more thing to try is simply burn a new copy of your DVD and see if it works any better. This would be equivalent to trying a different Nav disc. Burn it at the slowest speed available on your computer, and verify the copy. If the new copy doesn't work, the laser is almost certainly the problem.
If you are comfortable with electronics and soldering, you can replace the laser itself for under $20. Search the web and eBay for Sanyo SF-HD4. Instructions here:

Drop the window, pull the battery, disconnect the seat cables, undo the 4 floor fixings with a 14mm or 15mm ratchet, place a blanket or sweater over the door sill, stand the back of the seat upright or leaning forward, move the seat forward/backward to the position that envelops the seat rails the best ready for the lift-out, bend at the knees and lift up, step away and bring the chair out without hitting the paint.
Easy the 2nd time you do it.

IT LIVES!!! It was much easier than I thought. A pointer.... don't start the car with the seat out ;-) I had to move the car and then I wanted to verify the drive worked before closing everything up. Ended up with an airbag error (light on dash). I did clear the code so everything is good.
