So my friend mailed me his navigation unit because his menu button (the one on the left) isn't working. Being an electronic tech I told him I'd take a look at it and try to fix it. From what I've gathered so far it's just the actually switch that's broken. But before I venture into finding a replacement I have a question for all you navi people out there (kinda shocked my friend couldn't answer this) does the menu button light up? reason I ask is because the switch has a almost translucent white top (the actual plunger part) not something I've ever come across before.
Oh and does anyone know the pin out for the connector on this. after any type repair I would like to power it up so I can verify I fixed it.
I wonder if the illumination is created by the LED's on either side of the button. Was playing with it last night and noticed them.... either way I suppose if I get the menu button working and it doesn't light up then it is still better than how it was when he sent it to me.
I realize the button won't be connected to the plug on the back. I was looking for the pin out so I can figure out which pins are for the power. I was planning on hooking it up on the test bench at work. Was gonna try to turn it on and see if I can bring up the menu.
It might be difficult to test the button, short of reinstalling the unit back on the car. I believe all of the video signals come from the Nav computer under the seat, and the display might not show anything if you power up the unit by itself.
If you want to try, on the 18-pin connector, pins 1 and 2 are connected to power from two different fuses. Pin 3 is ground. Pin 5 is illumination (should cause LED's to light up).
I may not need to bother powering it up. The switch actually disassembled pretty easily once I got the actual button out the contacts underneath revealed the problem... One of the contacts was extremely corroded... Now I'm hoping I can salvage the contact... almost looks as if it had got wet somehow.
Oh and thanks for the link to the wiring diagrams.
