Aftermarket Stereos

I am looking at replacing my Harman Kardon stereo with an aftermarket stereo. Can I use the speaker system that's already in it? I need to know what parts I will need, so if anybody can help me I would really appreciate it! I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S and my amplifier is blown. Thanks, everybody!!

Robin

Short answer is 'no'.
The H/K uses the same head unit as the other systems, but uses different speakers (2ohm? 4ohm??) and the wiring runs from the HU to the amp (in the rear of the passenger side) and then out to the speakers.

There was a thread here not too long ago about an amp that would replace the H/K, but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks for your help Eric. I'll keep investigating. I don't want to pull the speakers just for an aftermarket unit. It would ruin the way it looks inside. If you do find that post, can you please forward it to me? Thanks!

Guess I was tired last night - it's right here. Sounds fairly technical though, and not significantly cheaper than a used H/K amp after all the components are purchased.

You'll be able to install aftermarket speakers BEHIND the grilles, so it doesn't look any different once the panels are back on.
An amount of wiring, to get signals from the HU to the speakers (since as said the wires to speakers currently go from rear where HK amp is located), but not impossible by any means.

Even though you are looking for a replacement and this other guy is looking for an upgrade, the same information may help you out.
