I just got my 2010 JCW on Friday, and my Motorola Droid on Saturday - Wow, what a weekend!
I've been trying to search through this forum, and I guess I just don't understand how the search engine works - the results are never really what I'm looking for. Even putting things in quotes or using +'s doesn't work. If someone can educate me off line, I'd appreciate it.
So, my question is... My Droid has paired with my JCW just fine. I can scroll through all my contacts using the other knob. But, when using the voice commands, I am told that the phone book is empty.
How can I download the phone book to the car?
Note: My wife's X3 has exactly the same problem with her Blackberry 8830.
It may be similar to the Iphone where you have to store voice entries in the car, separate from the contact list you see when using the other knob. Some phones you have to, some you don't. The instructions are around this forum some where. Like you, I haven't found the post with them using search.
For a while we thought the "empty phone book" message came from particular phones, but we've since figured out that cars without the factory installed nav need voice tags recorded to use voice dialing.
If you haven't recorded any voice tags to match with a phone book entry, this is the message that gets played. Cars that do have the nav system don't need the voice tags recorded to do the matching.
Schatzy62 has a nice rundown of instructions for creating the tags here, along with a couple of potential gotcha's.
Still though, and this may not be a Mini issue, I can't figure out how to add "voice tags". Is this done on the car or on the phone? I don't see any references to is in the car docs, or in the phone docs. :-(

I'll still keep searching...

Voice tags partly depend on what options you have in the car.
If you have NAV then the bluetooth should (but will not always) search the phones phone book and make the call from that.
If you do not have NAV then you will have to set up the voice tags in the MINI itself and that can be confusing as some manuals had misprints that made the system fail.
Also of note is that some phones work better than others in the cars. Please also be aware that the phone firmware (software) also make a difference in some cases.
