I'm thinking of getting a cupholder mount for my iPhone because it has to stay close to the inputs for the Y cable. Does anyone have any experience either good or bad with these types of mounts?
I have a similar one from Brackerton (that I picked up at Best Buy awhile back). It's been great with my BlackBerry, iPod Touch and/or Sony PSP gaming device...

Does anyone have any pictures of an iPhone mounted in one of these cup holder mounts? Do you mount them in the right or left cup holder? Is it a tight fit with the shifter?

I'm using my Ram Mount one in the left cup holder. My 24oz coffee cups from the gas station get stuck in the cup holders too tightly for me to get it out and drink it without fear of spillage or the lid popping off. So until I find a 24 oz travel mug, I won't be using it. OTH, I have been using the right one for bottled drinks and can reach that quite easily.
When its in its optimal position for me while driving, its _just_ in the way of reverse. So for quick trips around town where I don't need my GPS, its slightly less than optimal, but I bend it out of the way and back when I need to. Its a very strong neck, so it doesn't bend easily.
Well if thats what I'm using when I'm using the integrated voice stuff with my Mini's radio, then yeah? (For phone at least, I didn't know you _could_ select music by voice commands with that? lol I better sit in it and go thru the "help" menu. haha)
I'm not the one that created the diagram though, I found that on an Apple support forum.
I’ve got the same feature…but there are two things that the iPhone’s voice commands do that are better than Mini’s voice commands.
1) The iPhone voice command allows you to call anyone in your ENTIRE phonebook WITHOUT pre-programming the system to learn your voice. I also think it’s a lot more accurate in picking up what you’re saying on top of that.
2) The iPhone voice command allows you to play music by a specific artist which the Mini system doesn’t.
The Voice dial functions depend on what type of options you have in the MINI.
1. if you have NAV then the system uses the phones address book for the voice dialing, thus you should be able to call anyone in the phone book.
2. If you Do Not have NAV then the MINI uses its own Phone book which you must set up and has a limit of 20 names.
Note: this is how it works on 07-09 R56, 08-09 R55 and 09 R57 I have not done any testing with the 10's yet and with the H/K system it may be even more different.

Okay, iPhone dialing seems to work, iPod controls no. You select your iPod icon on the iPhone and it just gives you a screen that says your connected to the car.
So...anyone got any clue _how_ to set up the cars phonebook? When I tell the car to 'read phonebook', it tells me the phonebook is empty. But when I manually go into the phonebook with the 'other' button, it shows everything thats in my iPhone's contacts (but won't let you voice dial them thru the system), and I don't seem to see any way to add a number to the cars actual phone book?

The voice command entries and iPhone contact list are not connected. You cannot use the voice command system to access them. You have to program in each name and number (say the name, say the number,) and "Read Phonebook" will read those entries back.
It was a PITA to do this by the way. I had to repeat the process several times for some numbers as it didn't properly recognize some of the digits I was saying. I think the tonal quality of my voice does that. Maybe it was just playing with me. "I am sorry Dave, I am afraid I cannot do that..."
Oh, and the manual was wrong on the actual voice command to save name. I believe it stated use "Store Name" and it was actually "Save Name" or something like that. If someone runs into this problem (in a 2009) I can supply the full details.

Okay, thats what I thought, but I've been unable to figure out how to get this process started. Everything I've attempted so far I just end up with it telling me the phonebook is empty (Yes I know that! I'm trying to put some numbers INTO it you stupid thing! :D). Can you walk me thru one? Thanks!
Just to share my experience, I've been looking for some kind of adapter that charges my phone and plugs into the AUX input for my clubby.....
I picked up a "Monster iCarCharger AUX 1000" and I gotta say it was terrible..... The idea was great, but when it was plugged into my iPhone 3GS it sounded like the speakers were blown out!!! Then when I tried just plugging into the AUX input through my earphone plug, it sounded just fine...................???
Well if you have the iphone/usb option there is a leveling (i.e. volume) feature. If it is set too high it will create the effect you describe. I don't know if there is a plain old AUX input option or that is standard without the iphone/usb option, but if it is, the Leveling option may exist for that as well.

If you're not married to putting it in the cupholder (i.e. you realize that the USB integration is for the birds, or you buy a dock extension cable like http://www.cablejive.com/dock-extender-cable ), I'm pretty happy with what I knocked out with a Cravenspeed Flexpod mount in my R56 and a Griffin Autopilot Aux-in, and some light soldering to extend the cable to reach.
