I'm debating whether I should get a new amp or if I should think about some sort of EQ to boost sound quality. Is an EQ even possible with the Mini HU? I'm using:
Fronts: Focal 165VR3 3-way comps
sensitivity 93dB, RMS power handling 80W Rears: OEM Mini "HiFi" 6x9" speakers Amp: OEM Mini "HiFi" amplifier
8 channels, 6 x 25W (2 ohm), 2 x 40W (2 ohm) bass
I don't need huge volume, I just want some more bass and warm balanced sound from my speakers. Would an Amp or EQ be the best way to do this? What would make the biggest difference in terms of sound quality?
I'm not sure where you would connect an EQ with the HIFI amp.
Since the signal at the X9331 connector on the HIFI is fairly flat, you are probably better off adding an amp. I'll know for sure in a little while. I'm in the middle of that process.
I found this image of a test k6rtm had done of his non-HIFI MCSa, and my HIFI MCS. The original post is here.

As Robyn states there is really no place to put a EQ unit if using the OEM HiFi amp, as all the channel outputs from the HiFi and are EQ'ed to begin with. It probably would not be a good result.
One thing of note is that the speakers in the car are cheap and sound really bad. Just changing the speakers will make a big difference in the sound quality. I know when i changed from the OEM Speaker to Focal 3 ways up front and Alpine 6x9 three ways in the rear the sound quality jumped about 500%. Bass returned and the overall freq response was much better. This was without using the crossovers for the focals as each front channel is already crossed over by the HiFi amp.
When I needed more volume I added a Alpine PDX-5, 12" subwoofer, the crossovers for the focals up front and changed to pioneer 6x9's in the rear.

Thanks, Robin, that definitely shows the frequency rolloff on the rear speakers (or channel?). Would a new amp change that and allow more bass to the rear speakers, increasing bass output?

I have Focal 165VR3 (3-way) speakers up front and like them but am really looking to increase the bass/midbass response.
What kind of difference in sound quality, if any, did you observe when you added an amp to your Focal fronts and Alpine 6x9s?

The two X9331 curves is what you would get with an amp. Compare that to the last curve (HIFI Rear woofer) that you would be getting from the HIFI amp.
k6rtm didn't measure my front signal at the speakers because that would have required pulling the door panels off. With the non-HIFI he could measure it at the X9331 connector.
