Please help: Need advice on amp and how to boost volume.

Hey people, I hope I can get some help here and stop being so confused about all this. I have no clue on speakers/amps so sorry for the stupid question.

So the scenario is that I have a none HK system. I am running the OEM Head unit which I want to keep and add a amp to power the Polk DB6501 components I got for the front, and the 6x9 Polk MM691 for the rear. I did know that I needed to have a amp in the first place, but I figured it would still sound better then the OEM speakers with no amp. So after the install, the fronts have barely any sound, and the rears sound amazing when the volume is low and carry a lot of bass but sound really bad when turned up.

So my question is, since I ran them with no after market amp and did not like how these sounded, will they sound better with a amp ? I really don't know what amp to get or what else I can do to makes these sound better. Any advice I get is greatly appreciated. Below are two links on the speakers so you guys can see the specs.

Thanks a lot guys.

When looking for an amp you need to consider the RMS and Peak power your speakers can handle. RMS power is the amount of juice (watts = current * voltage) your speakers can take and play all day long with no problem. Peak power is what it sounds like, a peak handling amount that it can do in bursts. You should stay away from that.

So, I would suggest a 4 channel amp that does around 100 Watts per channel. Power will be listed like this: 65W x 4 chan. @ 4 ohms, 100W x 4 chan. @ 2 ohms...

Your front speakers are 4 ohm and your rear speakers are 2.7 ohm. You will never find a listing for 2.7 ohm, but the amp will put out less power to these speakers than the 2 ohm spec and more power than the 4 ohm spec.

You will probably be happy with anything above 75W per channel.

Additionally you will need large gauge wire to run from the amp to your speakers (12-14 aug). You will then need power wire and ground (4 aug) wire to run from battery + to amp (power) and from amp to ground on your car (ground). You will also need a remote turn on wire (18 aug) to run to your amp so it will turn on when your car does.

Lastly you will need a fuse spliced into your power wire between your battery and amp. Fuse size depends on power of your amp, so ask someone when you choose your amp what size fuse you need.

I think I covered everything, but feel free to correct me anyone. Let me know if you have any more questions as well.

Happy jamming!
