iPod adapter doesn't work

just bought a used MINI S convert with HK stereo and appears to have an iPod adapter installed (plug comes out in glovebox). There is no AUX mode displaying on the stereo and I get nothing when I attach the iPod onto the plug. Any ideas what might be wrong - before I take it to the dealer to get it checked?

nothing yet

I crawled under the driver and pasenger side of the dash to look (not an easy feat for me-I'm not exactly mini). I know the HK radio has an AUX and CD port but not sure which one the adapter is plugged into. I just bought the thing and am hesitant to start tearing the dash apart within 3 weeks after pulling it into my driveway. I can see where the cable for the adapter goes but cannot see where it terminates.
How difficult is it to pull the HK out and get to the backplane?
