Please post if you use BMW 'Y' lead and Apple iPod in your R56/55/57 MINI...
Hi guys, bit of research here.
I'm only interested in MINIs which have the USB/Aux socket, so the BMW 'Y' cable is used.
Please post, stating these details if possible :
What year of MINI you have?
What model MINI you have?
What iPod you use?
Do you leave it plugged in or unplugged?
If left plugged in, has it ever caused a problem to the car/iPod?
2008 Cooper Clubman
2nd gen Ipod Nano 2gb
left plugged in
no issues thus far
Is there a reason for the "research?"
I don't see any reason for it as this has all been hashed out in many other threads

Yes, MINI are in the process of blaming my iPod for the faults that my car displays. I just wanted to find out how other MINI Customers use their iPods in their cars.

No problems to date.
Tell Mini that if your iPod is at fault, they need to advise ALL Mini owners that it is NOT iPod compatible...otherwise, pound sand and FIX the problem!
My 2007 BMW 335i gave me issues with the iPod 12+ times till they finally replaced the iDrive unit...is a Software/Hardware problem IMO

iPod Touch first gen
Leave plugged in
No problems
What kind of display problems? It is their cable and their hardware / software that they charge for so if it did cause problems it would be their problem.

Nav displays 'black and blank' screens, sometimes with just the white location circle, other times with random writing in one corner.
Nav displays iPod tracks for example, but in the bottom left displays radio title.
Clock resets to --:--(and sometimes another random time) or 12:00am

Do you leave it plugged in or unplugged? both
If left plugged in, has it ever caused a problem to the car/iPod? None in the car, but iPod will NOT auto off unless I play a full song after disconnect.

with the Mini clock in the wife's clubman. I have a gizmo that plugs into the diagnostic port (something every car should be able to tolerate). If the car sits for a long time, the clock resets as does the trip odometer and the the MPG calculation. While this isn't he iPod interface, this shouldn't be happening at all, as the diagnostic port is SUPOSED to have stuff plugged into it. Also, there is an iPod integration module between the iPod and the car (go look at REALOEM.com for details) and that ought to tolerate the presence of the iPod. I'm guessing that this unit is borked on your car, but your dealer doesn't want to deal with it.
Really, an iPod integration unit that doesn't work isn't the fault of the iPod. But to cover your bases, you may want to try a different iPod.
I'm only interested in MINIs which have the USB/Aux socket, so the BMW 'Y' cable is used.

Good Luck!!

Have 2008 Clubman
Model R55
First gen Iphone worked like a charm.
now got the 3GS and all works but no charging. Mini dealer told me to get IFWA SCOSCHE adapter. It played music, listed my songs, contacts, etc but again no charge. Called Apple, and cust. service was not real familiar with problem and suggest to use the same adapter.

Year: 2009
Model: R56
iPod: iPhone 1st gen
Unplugged when I'm not in the car
Problems: see below
I've found the charging can be a little flaky and, if playing music, the charge rate is only slightly above the drain rate for playback. - [Edit] Also, see Schatzy's post here for more info on why charging doesn't always work.
Generally when I first plug it in, it will only show the "plugged in" symbol and then after driving around for awhile it will turn to the charging lightning bolt. Sometimes it does not though, and then generally some combination of disconnecting/reconnecting will finally fix the problem.
If it isn't charging, the iPhone battery seems to drain more quickly than normal. I'm not an electrical engineer, but it acts almost like it's feeding current back to the USB port (in addition to the power required for playback) if the charge circuit doesn't kick in.
Overall I'm glad I have it because it's great to have control of the ipod portion from the onboard systems, but disappointed that it isn't a solid product.
