I know...I don't even have my system running yet, and I'm already thinking about GPS, iPhone tethering and other stuff I can do with it.
I did play around with Centrafuse and the iPod yesterday, was quite impressed with the way that worked, but didn't get as far as making it play AAC files.
I'm worried I'm going to end up with a ground loop problem when I hook this all up tonight, maybe I'll stop by RS and get a GLI on the way home just to be safe....
I have had had an on and off again problem with ground loop noise. With or with out the GLI i have noise. Most of the time it is as if the noise is being generated by the OEM Radio not the cabling.

It's alive!! Got the 7" touchscreen, fired everything up with only minor issues - no ground loop that I can hear, went for a drive while my wife watched a movie (The Incredibles xvid) and it worked great. Weird issue with my DC regulated adapter....set on 12v it won't boot the PC, the power light just flickers on once then dies. However, putting the voltage down to 7v works just fine. No idea why, the factory ac/dc adapter is 12v. However, since I'm undervolting not overvolting I'm not too worried about it as long as it works.
Screen mounting is another issue - does anyone know which Proclip mount would work with the Liliput screen? Also, the extra cables on the screen VGA cable are annoying, does anyone make a replacement without the extra audio and video cables? I don't really want to just cut them off but I guess that's an option.

cool that your wife is enjoying the possibilities.
which dc adapter? the one i recommended? did you try waiting for the engine to warm up before powering on the computer? maybe the regulator won't step-up voltage if the car is running below 12V? have you checked the output with a voltmeter?
It wasn't the exact one you recommended, but very similar - 5 to 12v selectable output, 2000ma. I didn't try letting it warm up first, might try that tomorrow. I'll see if I can get a voltmeter to check the output but like I said, if it's running at 7v I can't see how that would be a problem.
I also saw the Kuda mount for the Cooper and I quite like where that mounts too...more expensive than the proclip but not up as high and probably wouldn't interfere with the secret compartment opening with the monitor mounted.
Since we're on the subject, how much work is it to get the secret compartment out and mount a computer in it? Does the whole dash have to come apart like it does for most things?
So, the trip to Boston went great - my wife was able to watch a couple of movies during the journey and the system ran perfectly. I reorganized some of the cabling so that the cigarette splitter and and all of the power adapters are now squeezed into the little cubby under the center stack...it's a little cramped and ugly but less of a tangle under/behind the passenger seat. I was thinking about whether it might be possible to run this all from the rear cigarette lighter socket instead...so many options
Startup/shutdown didn't seem to be an issue at all, as long as I remember to hibernate to save my position in a movie.
So, other than the mounting of the monitor (which right now is squeezed between the sport button mount and the toggle switch bank) I'm really happy with this build Thanks all your help guys, once I get the display mounted I will take some pictures
