It pivots up and the phone slides right into the connector.
It should also be noted the Razr is one of the few phones that can voice dial from the Mini without any setup on the Mini or the phone. The Mini can some how read and interpret my phone book's names and compare it to what I ask it to dial. Pretty amazing how well it works too.

After a lot of time consuming research and phone calls I finally am able to use the Blackberry 8830 to MINI with even phone book transfer. However, you will need a OS 2.2.176 (platform 3.0.0.79) on your BB. Don't think there is a sleeve yet.
Also, I found out that any bluetooth should be compatible (at least the you will be able to make and receive calls if not the phone book transfer). You will need to update the OS on the phone unless it is a really old phone.
Thanks for all the posts.
This is a ? we have been having as well. It seems that the www.wireless4mini.com list lists older phone models. Anyone see this? My Husbands co. offers 20% Discounts on our service, we will be switching carriers once MY 08 OB Baby arrives. The dealer did let us know that we would have to buy the cradle for the armrest, but if it only works for one type of phone and not ALL what's the point?

Was told that my LG VX5300 could be upgraded by Verizon so that it would be compatible. It had better be - perhaps I should give Verizon a call.
Just found this from an earlier post on 9/24/07:

Reason: missed earlier info
Has anyone tried to get a LG enV2 to fully work with a 2008 Mini.
I have been able to get it to pair but even after over 1-1/2 hours it has not taken any of the phone book in. I have heard that some phones take a very long time to sync but 1-1/2 hours seems like it should have done something.
Any one have an idea of what a long time means to sync the phone book to the car.
Any suggestions?
EDIT: Byt he way i have Verizon as none of the other carries work in my local area.

Your's is the first report so far.

I'd say if it hasn't gone in that time, chances are it won't.
The only phone that's been reported to take a long time, but still eventually syncs is the LG VX9800 (The V). So far, the others don't work. My guess is that the delay in this case was actually a fluke since they report it took a couple days.
The car syncs with the phone address book every time they initially connect- since they don't report syncing delays afterward, it's more likely it had something like interference problems the first day and isn't related to the phone. No way to know for certain without more reports on the same phone model though, so for now it can only be taken as is... Keep trying and maybe you'll get the same results?
thanks for the quick response. After a few hours of playing, making calls to Verizon, and Mini USA, I was not further along.
I then talked to Auto Wireless Solutions who does all the testing for BMW vehicles. And although they do not list Mini's on there web site www.getaws.com they do have loads of information if you ask for it. The things i found out are listed here.
1. BMW/Mini is on Generation 13 Bluetooth Modules.
2. Any phone listed for a BMW will work on a Mini as long as the Mini and the BMW have the same Generation module.
3. Each new Generation of module has newer capabilities but not always better it depends on the phone you are using as to which module will work best.
4. BimmerNav (www.bimmernav.com) sells the latest Generation modules and has some older ones as well but does not and will not confirm which phones work with what module.
5.BimmerNav expressly stated to stay away form LG phones as they have broken bluetooth software. i.e. it does not work most of the time.
Now on to a note you may want to add to your google doc.
this is straight from Auto Wireless Solutions.
"If a phone (any model) does not transfer the phone book then make sure you have the following ON the phone,
1. missed calls
2. received calls
3. dialed calls
If these have been deleted some phones will NOT transfer the phone book. So make some calls, receive some calls, and miss some calls and try again. This is not guaranteed to work but we have found many phones where this causes the phone book to be picked up by the vehicle bluetooth system. It can be different for two of the same model phone, where one works without the missed, received, dialed calls and one must have them."
That statement made me go and make sure I had such calls on my phone and try it again. It did not work.
Update to the LG enV2 (VX9100). At lease in my case
1. It will pair up and be seen.
2. you can dial from the dash or the phone and the system will mute the radio and play the call thru the radio.
3. ending calls is not a problem.
4. Voice commands seem to be random. one time it called the wrong number another time it called the correct number. (could be due to interference)
5. Steering wheel controls for switching to phone mode and dial button work.
As i figure out more i will keep you informed. As I drive in Connecticut fairly regularly I need the full hands free capability even if it means i have to spend more money on a phone and the fact that i have gotten very used to it in my BMW 2003 5 Series Wagon.
Again thanks for all the work you have put into keeping the document updated.
I'm continuing on my quest to find a verizon wireless product that works well with Mini's BT.
I haven't been able to find anything within NAM on the SMT 5800. If anyone has any feedback on this phone's successes, please let me know. Also, anyone purchase an unlocked Iphone and using it with success through verizon?
I know the blackberry's and motorola's (no qwerty) seem to work well but I'm hoping for a qwerty keyboard and don't need pda functionality so I don't want to have to pay the data fee of $30 month (required for any blackberry) for something I don't need.
Its frustrating ... I'm ready to jump ship to another provider at this point.

iPhone's will not work on the Verizon system as they use a different transmit and receive technology.

Jumping ship will only give you other head aches in trying to find a phone that works, as all carriers have limited phones that work with the Mini or any other car for that matter.
Now as for the SMT5800 It is a Windows based phone so you may get luckier with that than any of the phones fro LG or Samsung.
Your best bet with Verizon is to try it. Most stores will nto let you out of the store with in until you have paid for and set it up but if it does not work then they will take it back and work with you to find a phone htat does.

Thanks Schatzy. I had a feeling that it wasn't as easy as purchasing an unlocked iphone. I know that changing carriers doesn't fix the problem. Verizon appears to have more issues than most carriers with compatablility. If I changed at all, it would be with At & t/ iphone.
If it wasn't for this forum, there would be no helpful information because the mini compatability list is outdated and verizon is of NO help. Some of these threads at least give you information about the good, the bad and the good, but...
Thanks for your insight, now if only I had my MCS to start trying some phone options, I'd be all good!
so I don't want to have to pay the data fee of $30 month (required for any blackberry) for something I don't need.
Serious? Isn't data service optional?

If only someone were keeping a list of phones that worked...

Yep, HTC's have all been good so far, though I don't remember if anyone specifically mentioned that they were using them through Verizon. If you could install software on it, there's people that have reported that http://www.jetwaremobile.com/ has worked for adding better compatibility on WM phones.
With verizon to get a blackberry or other PDA style phone you are "REQUIRED" to have a data plan.
Stupidest thing i have ever heard of but that is how it is.

Yes you are but i think kellypgh already knows that and there are new phones coming out all the time that take time to make it to the list.

The SMT5800 is not a standard Windows phone installation though and is from reports i have read very very difficult to add software to. And in there is lots of software that will not work on it as it is a phone with a keyboard and no mouse/joystick. It is great for those that want texting capabilities but not the large size or functions of a PDA.

That is an awful price jump on the cost of the phone to jump to an iPhone .
Th price o f the phone is what is keeping me from getting one. They phone probably only costs a few dollars to make.
The iPhone like all Apple products are way over priced for what they are.

Just read in another new review that the SMT5800 does not support "Object Push" so it is very likely that it will not transfer the Phone Book over to the Mini or any other hands free kit.
Why in this day and age they eliminate these functions is beyond me.

Sorry, just feeling snarky today. I know the list is short lots of the Verizon phones too. It seems that the Verizon phones that are out there are either massively popular or just a handful of people.

It is your list which has been a big help in determining which phones I need to steer away from. Its just not as clear as to which ones work well with regard to the phones I'm considering. It has nothing to do with your data though. You are gathering the data provided from everyone here and putting it into a concise and understandable spreadsheet.
You have put a lot of hard work into that compiled list and it is definitely appreciated by me! Thanks for all the editing and updating, I will continue to refer to the list until I make a final decision on which phone works best.

What would help it work better for what you wanted? Maybe a drill-down type search like:
Code:
Show phones available through carriers:
[ ] Verizon
[ ] Sprint
[ ] Cingular
[ ] T-Mobile
That also have the following features:
[ ] Qwerty Keyboard
[ ] Touch Screen
[ ] Music Playback
( ) Run OS:
[ ] Symbian
[ ] Windows Media
Limit results to phones known to work with:
( ) R56 MINI Cooper or Cooper S
[ ] Will Sync Address Book
[ ] Will Voice Dial
[ ] Will Voice Dial without Manual Voice Tags

The spreadsheet you have currently designed works fine although these are some good ideas. I have no idea how much work is involved in doing something like this but it sure looks like lots of hours. It would definitely help from the aspect that the same phone appears to behave differently from one carrier to the next. You have great notes specific to that though.
What I meant by my comment was that there are clearly some phones that are not compatable by your list but some of the data is limited due to mixed or inconsistent feedback or not there at all because the phone hasn't been evaluated or feedback hasn't been posted.
I did notice that you don't have a Verizon category. Verizon seems to have their name on several phones but maybe they are on the list and I don't realize the manufacturer of the phone. As an example, the one I was asking about in the earlier post, SMT 5800. I'm not sure who the manufacturer is, but I didn't see it on the list. I assumed that no one has given any feedback on this model yet.

While not insignificant, the time required is probably less than the total amount of time I throw to NAM anyways. Besides, it'd make managing the list quite a bit easier, it's getting rather unwieldy.

My hope is that a system like what I posted would make it easier for people to contribute their experience with a phone and also help make the reports less ambiguous. It's a lot easier to check an extra box than it is to watch a busy thread like this for reports and answer replies

Another thing it would do would be to let me easily cross reference different model numbers, or report that we know the phone is a possibility, but that there are no reports yet. In this case the SMT5800 is manufactured by HTC, but as you guessed, there's no reports that I know of.

I second that! I called today just to confirm that the information I received in the store was correct because it didn't seem right... verizon, of course, blamed it on the manufacturer.

Which is really all that I need it for - texting and phone functions (not pda/email).

I agree, but the price has come down to a more acceptable level than when they first came out.
