I would think anyone on the other side of the pond with access to any of the other country's 2008.1 versions would be able to find out if anything was done to the POI system.
The update is from Navteq and not Mini. Did you try contacting Navteq about that issue?

We covered this with him already and it is pretty much just him griping for the sake of griping. I guess he thinks that MINI is reading this and listening.
Anyway, V31 has been released for the MK4. I have not installed it yet, but I do plan on doing this tomorrow.
I didn't check through the rest of the thread to see if Navteq was ever contacted. What is the v31 update for MK4? This must be for pre-r56 Nav systems?

Yeah, but the directory search issue that he says is broken is on all models of MINI and BMW.
Not only is MINI, BMW AND Navtech "reading" this thread, but all three of them have separately emailed me directly concerning the issue.
Not to mention my Dealer, is also reading the thread and VERY interested in the outcome as I've already requested a refund for the system which is, by all definitions BROKEN and NOT PERFORMING as advertised.
But to answer the question, I and about 1000 other users (to quote Navtech tech support) have all contacted Navtech about the problem. ;-)

No!! The question is: Where is the FIX for our BROKEN Navigation software which cost us a rip-off $2,100.
I'm traveling today (Springfield, MO, fun fun!), and every time I rent a car it's and Avis car with a little cheapo Garmin GPS unit. The amazing little unit I'm told costs $299. It has a touchscreen, built in bluetooth, a POI database that actually WORKS, category's which are arranged properly and such that they makes sense, and above all, you can search for the name of something, without having to select a category. And even better yet, you can search for a category itself, by entering in a keyword, like "Sign", and it will return with some matching or appropriate categories.
What a concept, a POI database that works as advertised. The really amazing thing is, Garmin doesn't even advertise that you can search 6 million POI's. They just assume you know that already. MINI/BMW on the other hand, are actively advertising you can search and find 6 million POI's. Yet, you can't!!
Pretty amazing if you ask me. Embarrassing is a better word.

And for those who don't understand the problem with the software, here is an analogy:
Mini has sold us a POI(point of interest) db with 6 million entries in it, which can not be queried in a reasonable manner. The equivalent of selling us a dictionary with 6 million words in it, in no particular order.
"Oh, ALL the words are in the dictionary!! It's your problem on how to find them. Just flip through the 800+ pages of randomly printed words."
I still find it hard to believe this software made it though testing???

Some of us just don't sweat the little things. Others are never happy and always feel cheated. We have 11 pages of what you just told us. I'd be happy to hear when there is actually something new going on. I thought the 2008.1 update might be something new.
I'll be happy when MINI fixes the problem they sold me!!
If you bought a dictionary, got home and opened it up, and found the words were in no particular order, what would you do?
Yes, you would go back to Borders books, and get your money back or a dictinary that was in the proper order. And THAT is exaclty what we should be getting, our money back, or the software fixed.
And this is "no little thing". They sell 50,000+ cars in the US. Probably 5k or 10k of those have Nav in them. At $2,100 X 10,000 = BIG BUCKS!!!

I was traveling all week, and while on the road I received a phone call to my cell (not sure where they got the # from?) from a "manager at MINI North America". He wanted specific details about this problem and an explanation. I gave him all the details, and was on the horn with him for about 1/2 hour. Interesting conversation.
Update in the works??? hmmmmmmm.......

Not much, just ALOT of questions about the specifics of the problem. Then the obligatory, "we are going to look into it".
TIC TOC, TIC TOC, TIC TOC......
An even better update: I was just given a preview/test access of a VERY insteresting WEBsite about to come online regarding this issue. See that fan spinning around? Well, me thinks something is just about to hit that fan!!!

Sorry I've been away for a while. Been having some family issues and haven't been able to spend any time on this stuff (in fact, I haven't been on the NAM forums in quite a while now).
Anyway, I just got the new 2008.1 North America disc for our 2nd gen MINI and it works well. I haven't had time to play with it too much but I can tell you that there's no difference in the way the POI search features work, etc. (obviously that would take a system firmware update and not a map DVD update as I've mentioned many times in the past). It does however appear that they've updated lots of the POIs though (they're claiming 7.1 million "updated" POIs whatever that means).
When I get some time, I'll see about working on my "fixed map DVD" again using the latest 2008.1 map DVD.
Also, I see that for the 1st gen MINI's they've released v31 of the firmware and one of the fixes in the new firmware is the ability for the older MKIV drives to be able to read dual layer DVDs. If it works well, that should resolve the free disc space issue I was having (i.e. I can now use a DL DVD with LOTS of free space available). I have a new 2008.1 map DVD sitting here for the 1st gen MINI as well so I'm good to go. Just need to find the time.
BTW, even though NavTeq doesn't list an update available for the 2007 and 2008 2nd gen MINI's (heck, they don't even list the 2007 and 2008 MINI's on their site yet), the 2nd gen MINI's use the EXACT same map DVD as the new 2007 & 2008 3 Series BMW's (i.e. the "Professional" version of the DVD-CCC map disc). The BMW and MINI map DVD discs are 100% identical in every way (you have my word on that!). Here's the link if you want to purchase one for your MINI:
$200 is indeed a lot to spend on the update if it doesn't have a whole lot to offer you that's for sure.
BTW, for those of you that do update, note that when you first insert the new disc, your system will tell you that a new map DVD has been found and it will display the following message:
"New DVD Version, shut down system and restart in 5 minutes"
Don't be alarmed. Simply turn off the car, lock the doors and walk away from it for about 5 to 10 minutes. When you return, the new DVD will be fully functional.
The older 1st gen (MKIV) system doesn't do that. You can swap map discs on-the-fly. The new "Professional" system must do a lot of disc caching (in order to speed up disc reads) which requires a complete shut down of the system to flush the cache of the old map data.
