Why Mount Washington?

Mount Washington has some of the most unusual weather in the world. The highest wind speed ever recorded was on Mount Washington in 1934, 231 mph. There is a weather observatory on the summit, which has daily reports of their current weather here:

The story of 1934:

If you ask me, the amazing thing about the highest recorded wind speed is not the speed itself, but that someone climbed to the top of the tower in 125 mph wind to knock the ice off the anemometer to record the wind they knew was going to pick up overnight.

My first trip up the Mount Washington Autoroad was in 2004 in 70 mph winds. Minis handle really well in high winds!

I'm sure climbing it is much more challenging than driving it in a Mini, even though that is fun in its own right. 135 mph must have been intense!

Mt. Washington's weather is an interesting thing. One time we tried to hike up Mt. Washington but had to turn around because the winds were 70+ mph (an experience I would rather not repeat). Another time we drove up the road to the peak, and it was clear blue with no winds. It's a beautiful place, though.

Having climbed Mt. Washington twice on my bicycle, I'm looking forward to sitting back in my MINI and enjoying the climb for once!

I would think that the drive would involve much less exertion. See you there!

That was my first year too and nothing beats that feeling while sitting in your mini parked in the lot on top...and it feels like you are going down the highway, with your suspension jumping up and down from the wind.

Mount Washington weather is so bad because three storm tracks converge at the peak.

But hiking is the best way to go up the mountain. Anybody can take the auto road

By hiking, you get to see all the trail markers where somebody died of exposure in certain spots

Hiking, with skis on your back, to enjoy the snow at turckermans in the spring, is the best way up in my opinion. Back in high school when I had working knees at least.
