HPR Track Day - MINI5280 & LOCO

The Lotus Club of Colorado (LOCO) is inviting members of MINI5280 and Minis of the Rockies (MOTR), as well as other auto enthusiasts, to participate in their inaugural Track Day at the new High Plains Raceway on June 28, 2009. The goal is to get 50-60 cars, with 60 being the maximum, to spread the costs of track rental. Prior track experience is not required; there will be track familiarization and driver instructors briefing beforehand.

The only requirements will be safety helmets (loaners available) and long sleeve shirts. Convertibles with roll bars (i.e.Mini Cooper) are OK. Run groups will be made up of drivers/cars of similar experience and capability. The track will be open all day so there will be plenty of track time. For further info on HPR, go to highplainsraceway.com

The cost will be $100-125, depending on number of cars, and if a minimum is not reached they will refund deposits. A deposit of $100 is required with the Request for Entry. LOCO is asking that Request for Entries be submitted by about FEB 15. It is early because they have to make a firm reservation with advance deposit to hold the June 28 date.
Richard Shearer will be at the Dyno event Feb 7 and the next meeting Feb 10th with Request for Entry forms and to answer any questions. If you don't get a form, you can mail a check with info on you and your car direct to John Arnold, who is running the Track Day. Richard is a member of MOTR and LOCO and believes both the Mini folks and the Lotus folks will have a great time at HPR.

Sign-up on the calendar: Track Day

We will have forms available at the MINI5280 club meeting on Tuesday February 10th (see this thread: Meeting)

Because of sun spot activity and the current global economic crisis, the email I sent out last night was nearly incoherent. All the right words but order left something to be desired. Anyway above post is correct.

I have the Request for Entry form so I will make copies and bring to the club meeting on Tuesday. I will also scan and email to anyone that requests me to do so. Send your email request to: President@MINI5280
A $100 deposit will be required, along with the form no later then February 15th. If the event get 60 cars total then it will cost $100.

I'm in too. This is a great way to get track time. And dirt cheap! A good way to get some practice before autocross this season.

I sent you an E-mail requesting the entry form. I can't get off of work until 800ish so I can't make the meeting.

What rating helmet is required? Does it matter if it's an open faced or closed faced helmet?

Thank You
Dan

Dan:

The Helmet must be "SNELL" approved . Some motorcycle helmets are only "DOT", the more expensive will have both. CSP Track in Golden & many others also require they not be over ten years old.

Corrected post: May 18, 2009

Helmets must be current SNELL 2005 or SA2000 , as noted some of the organizers allow a helmet less than 10 years old.

The helmet has to be sound, no cracks and never dropped/impacted.

This event is requiring SNELL 2005 or SA2000 , they will have limited loaner helmets.

I have an old Shoei SA90 full face, but I will be getting an inexpensive SNELL 2005.

High Plains Raceway Track Day June 28

Good news! John Arnold, the Lotus Club event steward, says they have 47 confirmed signups and expect to have 60-62 finally so the event is on.This will keep the fee about $100, unless an ambulance is required to be onsite by HPR. In this case, add an extra $20. We will have more details later.

Very good to see. Thanks for the update. I sent in my form and deposit.

Now I need to find a decent helmet with current rating, but not to expensive.

Don, You can use a loaner from the Lotus folks if you don't get a new one. Also, I don't think they will require a current helmet rating for their track day; I''l check.

I will just buy one as I see this as something I will probably be doing whenever the occasion presents itself.
Plus I would like to try my hand at running over some cones this year in autox.

I talked today with John Arnold, the event organizer, and he said they welcome more signups. They have the date, June 28, reserved and currently have about 60 and will go up 70. That breaks down to about 25 Lotus, 20 Miata, 10 MINI and some others. To sign up, mail a check, made out to Lotus Colorado/ John Arnold, for $100 with your e-mail address to:
...

Email me at info@mini5280.org and I will get you the address and phone number
Chuck
...
He will e-mail you a copy of the Request for Entry to get your pertinent data.
**** Shearer
PS They are having a post-checkered flag party for everyone at the end of the day.

Update on helmet.

From what I have gathered in information.

SA2000 or SA2500 SNELL rated helmet, open or closed face is what is needed for this event and any lapping days at HPR.

I have talked with Andy Antipas who operates

http://www.titannorthamerica.com/

He can get Zamp or Bell SA2005 Open-Face helmets for $200 plus tax & shipping. Zamp is Bell in the EU per Andy. Contact him via email via his website and current pricing if you looking for a higher priced full-face helmet. He carries good merchandise and caters to the Vintage and PCA race folks.

I am going to order a Zamp Open SA2005 in XL, I had the opportunity to try the full-face Zamp in XL this weekend, it fit very tight compared to my Shoei XL full face. We figure with foam compression it will be just right.

I am interested too, if it's not too late. I was looking around for info on what else is required by the track(drip can, etc). Can someone post the info or a link to that info.

Thanks.

EDIT: I found this on the track website, but it's for "Lapping Days". Just want to make sure I don't need anything else.

If you email Chuck or contact Mr. Shearer (nam does not like his first name), they can get you the required form. I saw on the RMVR BB that they are still looking for interested participants.

If you are planning on running your new MINI, you should be good to go with helmet and a full tank of fuel. No drip cans are needed, just a car that is not dropping bad stuff on track.

If you bring out an old race car, it must be safe and drip free!

And I bet they will do a more complete technical inspection on it at track.

Come on out, it should be fun.
