No one has any suggestions? wow... i am surprized. I know that they are not really high end cameras but they are, what i thought, to be the best in that price range. I would love to spend more because i am just getting into photography but i am buying a house soon and cannot afford any more.
Anyway - thanks to those who read. good luck to you all and keep the beautiful pics coming.

I am a nikon guy but if I had to by one of those Canons I would get the Elph...they seem to be pretty durable and take great pictures from what I hear

One thing to investigate is whether the three cameras use different CCD image sensors or not. If they use the same one, then you can just ignore those megapixel differences; you're ultimately going to get similar resolution with all three cameras. I believe Canon makes their own sensors, so this may not be the case.
A friend of mine recently got that Elph 630 and absolutely loves it, but it's also her first digital camera, so I'm not sure that she'd have any complaints regardless.

You are looking at three different cameras with three different purposes in mind. They are each great in their purpose.
The elphs take great photos for the tiny subcompact size, and really can be brought anywhere in your pocket.
But their tiny size means a tiny sensor and a tiny lens. They can't possibly compete with the larger cameras.
The 630 takes a much better photo. If you don't absolutely need to have it fit comfortably in your pocket all the time (will you be keeping it in a pouch or purse?) than it is a much better choice, and also cheaper.
The SD series trades compactness for the A series view finder, AA battery and manual mode flexibility. The 630 has a larger sensor and so the image quality is slightly better than the other two, and has a swivel screen. The 710 has 6x zoom and image stabilization. The 4 batt 630 will recycle flash shots faster than the 2 batt 710, but comes with the size and weight penalty, as will carrying back-up batteries.
I had the SD630 and currently own the SD800 IS. They are both for my wife. I found the picture quality from the SD630 to be better than the over-processed look of the DIGIC III processor in the SD800. The only problems she had with the SD630 were the lack of the view finder and absence of image stabilization....
Both the cameras are versatile and are good for P&S photography and can, to a certain extent, be customized for specific needs.

sorry if i sounded poopie in my second post, its just i have read everything i can on these two camera and cannot make up my mind and i always come here and look at this section because the pictures are just beautiful and this, i felt, was the best place to get an honest opinion...
I need this camera to take good pictures, the slimness of the digital elph is not a concern because i do still have my old elph and i can take that if needed. But i need a camera to take good shots of pictures of my jewelry that i am making so i can start a web site. my camera takes good pics but the ones of the jewelry are all blurry, even on macro mode, and some one told me that is just because its old...ithe newer ones can pick up detail better --
so with that said, i should go for the A630...?

I recently posted a similar question but with bigger cameras (10-12x zooms).
Someone posted back that the Powershot 710 was a great camera and met most of my requirements (except for the "ultra-zoom", it's a 6x).
Of those 3 mentioned, I would probably be getting the 710.
However, I am loving this trial Powershot S3 IS. 12x zoom with all sorts of functionality!
