I need a good general usage lens for EOS 30D

I cashed in my Amex rewards points for a EOS 30D, now the question is if you could only afford one good quality IS lens, which one would you recommed for general use?

I have the 28-135mm IS as well, good lens. If you want wider angle, get the 17-85mm EF-S IS, I think thats a better all around lens for a 1.6X crop factor camera like the 30d. 28mm on a 1.6X camera just isn't wide at all.

It really depends on what you want to do with the camera. I used the 28-135mm for 2 months before I decided to get a 17-35 and a 70-300 IS to complete the set. I wanted to get one lens only to begin with, but I caught the photography bug soon after

I'm actually considerng selling the 17-35mm and the 28-135mm for a 17-70mm instead, so I don't have to carry 3 lenses with me.

Xtremepsionic the camera comes with 17-55 lens, I just can't tell which one until it arrives, and there is not enough detail at the reward site to say its an IS lens or not, hopeful it will arrive in the next two weeks, the body came yesterday, if its not an IS then 28-135 looks like a good choice.

Shukes24 great pics

The 17-55 is an IS lens, thats a very good lens, right up there with the best of them. However, 55mm is quite short, I would definitely buy another lens for the long end. However, this depends on what type of photography you do. Personally I like the flexibility and I do quite a bit of wildlife so I need that 300mm IS lens.

18-55 would be the entry level lens in the Canon line, which totally doesn't do justice to a 30D if you ask me

That said, if you never really print out bigger than 8X10, then there is no need to worry about what lens you use, they all pretty much look the same if you don't blow up the picture much. But then again you don't need a 30D if you just shoot pictures for emailing anyway.

congrats on joining the EOS 30D club. I can't suggest a lense as I just got mine last week and I'm still in kindergarden with my training wheels on. Good luck

Well guys the lens that is included is 18-55 which is not an IS lens, so I just ordered the 28-135 IS lens from Amozon.com for $419, it should arrive tomorrow just in time for VIR this weekend, now if I only get one student I should have time to play with this new toy
