I still think it is way too expensive to switch from a SLR to DSLR. But if the D70s drop to $500. I would get one without a doubt.. That D200 is far away to me.

I am so close to having the money for a 70-200 VR and then this happens. I know, always go for the glass, newer & better bodies will always come along. This is one hell of a deal for $1,700; mirror lock up, weather sealed, wireless compatible, vertical grip available, metering with AI lens, and black & white support, plus much more.

I may find my lens fund seriously depleated come January. Nikon you rock!

Happy Shootin'!

The D200 seems to be really reasonably priced for what it offers, relatively speaking... cool!

Looks really good, doesn't it? Personally, I'm glad Nikon is consistant with the "1.5x crop factor" and hasn't taken Canon's path of having a mix of three different sensor sizes.

This does look like a sweet camera, I may have to raid my son's college fund to get it

Some reviews here:

Man, that certainly looks like someting worth waiting for! And Dec is not that far off...

My Canon G1 crapped-out on me a couple months back (fuse), and I can't wait to get something. I've been using my webcam and wife's thin 2 megapixel Casio...

Hard to believe that I spent like $1k for the G1 a few years ago, and what that money can get now! Might stay with Canon, and I'm leaning toward the 350D...

However, prior to digital, I was a Nikon guy, and I'm contemplating putting my 8008 and various lenses on craigslist to get a couple hundred bucks, and put that toward this next digital. However, it seems that I can use those Nikkor lenses from many moons ago with today's Nikon digital cameras? Because if so, that might have me lean toward a Nikon digital, such as the D70 or D70s. Dave, I might be interested in your D70, if I can make use of my Nikkor lenses...

Thanks for sharing Dave!

D70, D50, D70s D100 all couldn't support any MF lenses..
only 1 digit bodies such as d1 d1h d1x d2 etc etc
but
D200 will do. That's why it's such a HOT body

Hmmm . . . I've used both my 28 and 105mm manually-focusing primes on my D70 before. Obviously, you just manually focus like we used to in the older days.

The only thing funky is that they show up as 0mm lenses (yeah, that's a zero) on the EXIF stuff.

Thanks for the follow-up guys! I'm going to put the 8008 up for sale, and get the 350D body, and pick an ideal lens. If I get back serious into the hobby again, something like this D200 looks sweet.

if you're looking at getting one of these I'd suggest getting on the list ASAP. we were told in a meeting today that they will be on extremely limited supply... most likely the entire store allotment will be sold before they even hit the shelves.

Here's a post I put together a while back. It's not D70 specific, but it should get you started How-to :: Making better MINI Photographs

As for the D70 specific stuff:
1) if you have an SB-600 or SB-800 read up on the D70's "commander mode" which enables wireless triggering of the speedlight using the D70's pop-up flash.
2) I would invest in the $20 IR remote so you can do easier Bulb Mode shooting to get shutterspeeds longer than 30 seconds (manual mode only)

Other then than, i can't think of much that is D70 specific. The How-to linked above is really where I would start.

Hope that helps. If you have questions, feel free to PM me or post.

Dave

mmm oh my goodness d200 *drool*

I'm using a N70 (film) right now. Pictures: http://www.pixelision.com/index.php?cat=10004

If anyone wants to donate their D70 to me I promise I won't say no! I model for a bunch of photographers on fridays... less for looking good for other people and more for listening to tech talk about hot cameras They are loaded with gorgeous cameras, accessories, laptops, flash set ups.... everything

I'm seriously thinking about getting one as soon as I can sell my Canon 20D. I still have a lot of lenses from my old school Nikon F4s.

I saw one tonight, but didn't get to play much since it was a customer's camera and he's kind of a tool. I think he just got it to have the newest thing... not because of what it can do. FYI, Ritz has them backordered for 8 weeks. I don't expect one on the shelf until at least march :(

I ordered one this morning. The estimated shipping date is 1-21 to 1-31. When I get some time in with the new body I'll post my impressions here. As far as convincing ones wife goes.....good luck.
