I have a DVD of some hot laps with my Mini at Mosport that a friend filmed for me as a passenger. Unfortunately, I am a bit of a computer knob and have no idea how to get from this DVD to a format that will let me post the video to this forum. Can anyone help walk me thru this, or is it even do-able ? Thanks gang.
You say you got a DVD of track footage and want to know how to share it with us?
Well the final resulting video clip should be in WMV (Windows Media for PC users) or Quicktime MOV for Apple/Mac users.
If the DVD is a true authored DVD that plays on a set top player, then the video file has been encoded in a MPEG-2 DVD Compliant stream--aka 4Mbs to 9Mbs. Platform (PC or Mac) makes no difference here.
What you need to do is DeMux or RIP the DVD into viewable MPEG file. If you stick the DVD in your computer (assuming you got a DVD drive), you will see a bunch of big files ending in VOB. These are the video files, and unusable for anything other than an authored DVD.
So, before you can convert it to WMV or MOV, you need to convert that VOB into an MPEG 1 or 2 stream. Check out http://www.videohelp.com/
You can also convert the DVD to DivX. It's a good clean format, but because it requires a CoDec download, it limits the people viewing it to only the hardcore.
