cool thanks for the vids. so what happend on the Ring vid? are you saying he lost a wheel, as in it came off? or just got the rear end out too far? it did seem like he was entering that corner too fast.
His wheel came off. You can hear the hub/rotor/suspension hit the pavement just before the spin.
His words were translated loosely by someone on the Pcar site. He saus that the wheel came of then says a few words in English ( ) and then that he can't get out of the car.
I think Derek Bell's lap of 6:41 is one of the fastest laps available on video, so the 6:55 is no "record" in outright terms. Oddly, on the video'd lap he is passed by Jackie Ickx who is doing his qualifying lap for pole, so it must have been faster than Bell's lap time! Which means the ultimate fastest NorthLoop lap must be under 6:41. When passed by Ickx, Bell bemoans the fact that he is being slowed down by the weight of the video camera! Now that's what I call sensitive.
I just watched the Michael Vergers video--the Derek Bell lap is way faster and way smoother! The 956 in the hands of Bell is clearly smoother and better composed (probably due to the ground effects, even though Bell in his commentary says the GE worked against the car in many places on the 'Ring.) Bell doesn't use as much road as Vergers, and he goes through the carousel much better, especially the nasty transition on the exit.
Derek Bell stil rules the 'Ring IMHO.
thanks for the vids though--I could watch cars going around the Ring all day! Have you seen the Porsche go round it in the rain video? Woohoo...
The interesting thing about Hans Stuck's lap is that it's the full Nurburgring circuit, including the F1 circuit and the North Loop. He's smokin' on that lap (you can tell he's pleased with it when he finishes the lap!) And when you consider the traffic that certainly held him up, it's incredibly fast.
btw, Onasled, I really enjoy watching your MINI videos! You have given many Porsches and BMWs and Cobras (!) a few things to think about in your exploits.

cheers,
Thanks.
Track season is over for me but I do dhave some vids that I can still put together to freshen things up. I never really made one out of my Watkins Glen footage, and I also have some decent rain driving ones at LRP.
Have one I can put together of a GT-1 car also that I put my camera in.

You're giving up too soon, Greg. ;)
I'm encoding a video from NHIS taken yesterday. Of course, my Cooper is nowhere near as fast as Greg's S. Using the timing on the video, my fast lap at NHIS, using both chicanes, was a mid 1:33. I'll start a thread for the NHIS day as one of the other MINIs there mentioned that he's on NAM off an on... perhaps he'll chime in too.
Onasled great vids thanks for posting. I love the " touch " of english slipped in there. Watching these videos makes me realize how really good the detail of the Gran turismo 4 video game is .
Did you notice how many apex's he missed and the couple of times he thought about changing gears and didn't? He also went into a lower gear around a couple of the turns that he didn't have too.
And how would you like to tighten your seat belts going over 150 mph ! ! !
Love that Stuck video. Absolutely one of the greatest drivers ever !
Wow, in my oppinion I think the the M3 driver (Hans?) was just slightly better driver. He seemed to hold his speed through corners better and he hit almost all the apexs just right. Now the first video might have been faster but I think the M3 had a better driver or he had more experience on this particular course. That is just my two cents.
I actually did some research, and Derek Bell holds the competition record at 6:22 even though another Porsche driver went 6:11 in practice (I'll post his name later.) Those are incredibly fast times and due to combinations of wonderful cars, ground effects and superb drivers who know the course very well. Hans Stuck is one of the greatest production and prototype car drivers of all time, and he knows the Ring very well--hence the M3 seems to be driven much better than the other "production" car (SR8--if that's a street car, then my MINI is a race car because of the tires I use!)
Onasled--my research revealed the two different records--one for race cars and one for street cars as you noted. I'd say there's so much room to argue that the SR8 is not a street car that the distinction is silly. The 956s will never race again, nor will we see an F1 car run the North Loop, so it's all a bit academic, but fun to see, and think about.
I will post the links to the Bell lap, and the Porsche in the rain tomorrow when I'm at work. I have collected about a dozen Ring laps so far, including one of a MINI! Lots of Porsches, of course, but the Bell lap in 1983 is the coolest, even though it's not of the fastest (6:41 v. 6:25)
The M3 lap is also amazing given how many cars Stuck had to pass--as someone noted, he was totally committed on those passes--pure magic to watch. He also stars in a documentary on the success of Audi Quattros in the US that once showed on Speed channel. There's footage there of him driving around the outside of other IMSA cars in the rain--unfrickin believable, but due to the total dominance of the 4wheel drive cars in that era.
That is just unbelievable . How would you like to be out there minding your own buisness , going as fast as you can and have the paint sucked off your car as Hans blows by. You have to hand it to the other dirvers they were very aware of their mirrors. He was in sight of and by a few of them in less than 15 sec. great video !!
