Canon Elura 60... Canon's mid-level miniDV (I'm sure many of you are familiar with it). So far, it seems to have pretty good performance, pretty much doing everything I want it to do. I'm gonna play around with it and the MINI this weekend, I have some funny ideas that might turn out cool... We'll see :D
Next, a vacuCam, if it will work with the camera, I haven't checked into it yet.
Good luck with it, Canon has had a terrible rep as of the last 4 years with its cheaper consumer models. I have an Elura 40MC which is practically useless because of a "Tape eject" problem. If you search on the net about 60% of Elura users get the same problem after the first 12 months. I knew the problem was REALLY bad when i saw about three other tourist with the same problem while i was on vacation last year in Vegas.....
I would almost go as far as saying you should return it and get a Sony......
And i'm a canon lover, I own a canon digicam, Rebel, and plan on getting a Digi-Rebel.
The truth is, I'm not too worried about it, because I got everything free through an American Express rewards points program. My fiance's parents let us get whatever we wanted through the rewards catalog as kind of a wedding gift, and the Elura 60 was the best camera we could get through that with the points we had. They didn't have any Sony's unfortunately, or I would have gone for one of those.
It came with a case, a 64MB SD card, bunch of tapes, and a bunch of other stuff that I was quite pleasantly surprised they included. Anyway, as long as I can get a year or two out of it, I figure I'll be almost ready to buy a new one by then anyway.
I've had a Canon miniDV camera for years and I'm thrilled with it. Its one of the ZR models, but I'm not sure which number. oh well. Its 5 or so years old and still works flawlessly. Congrats on the purchase. I'm sure you'll have fun with it.
Yeah, haha... I've been playing with it since I got it... Brought it to work even. I've been keeping it in the car just incase I want to play with it :D
Based on my source of information, the Elura 60 seems like a decent camcorder. It sells for around $360, and seems to have a lot of features. As for whether it will work with the VacuCam, the answer seems like a yes, but without any control over the camcorder recording.
Meaning, yes, it appears from the specs that you can use it with any of the VacuCam system, however without LANC support, you cannot use a remote start/stop switch to lengthen your recording time.

My Canon ZR-90 is great and works with my vacucams, but it also does not have the lanc port for remote start/stop. Fortunately, I am using a cruise cam mount and the camera controls are within easy reach if I do need to stop and start.

Got the CruiseCam mount, it's nice!! Getting my mini back today (it's been at the dealer getting it's last little bit of warranty work done before 36K), so I'll test it out tonight, yay!
I have a sony DCR-HC65, I did the same as you I bought a chasecam and a vacucam, hooked them up with a switch box from Radio Shack. Put one cam in the front and the other on the back window at the Dragon this time I'm going to mount one cam to the front bumper and the other to the front window and make a run up the dragon.
