Canon digital SLR users - new EF-S lenses on the way

So, I found news of the new D20 coming out soon. But, as a digital rebel user, I don't care too much about that. How about new lenses, though?

EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5
EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS (image stabilization)

Info from www.photographyblog.com
http://www.photographyblog.com/comme...d=3445_0_1_0_C
http://www.photographyblog.com/comme...d=3446_0_1_0_C

So, is it time to retire the EF-S 18-55mm that came with the Rebel? No idea on prices for the new lenses yet. I heard the new stuff will be anounced Aug 20th, and ship on Sep 20th.

What are other people's plans for lenses, now?

I have the 18-55 that came with the camera, a 35mm prime, and a 55-200mm zoom. I'm currently thinking that if the pair of new lenses can be had for $500 or less (for the pair), I'll get those and ditch the 18-55. That way, I'll have three zooms that overlap nicely, with image stabilization on the middle one. I can tripod the big(er) one if necessary, and a wide zoom for when I need it. And a prime for... ummm... something, I'm sure.

I've had my 10D for 16 months now, with only the 28-135 IS lens. I'm lucky that it perfectly fits my shooting style and the only times I've wanted anything else I've rented the 70-200L (awesome), 75-300 (junk) and the 100-400L (hard to use).

The thought of a really wide angle like the 10-22mm intrigues me, but the f3.5-4.5 seems really slow for a wide angle lens with only a 2x zoom. Makes me doubt its quality - unless it's really cheap, then it would just be a fun toy lens!

Refreshing to hear from someone looking at lenses who isn't planning on spending $2000 on L glass (although I highly recommend trying it out if you have the chance - it makes an incredible difference).

As far as the 20D is concerned, 8.2mp doesn't interest me. I like the 5 frames/second and 25-frame buffer, though. What will get me to upgrade will be a sensor with a wider dynamic range so I don't have to worry about blown highlights all the time.

I've had a D60 for a couple of years (some of my work can be seen here: http://www.pbase.com/tomcat) and have invested quite a lot more in glass than the original $2100 body. This new D20 looks very interesting to me!

Love the aurora borealis (sp?) sequence - very cool. I think going from the D60 to the 20D would be a good investment. I saw someone once recommend only buying every other upgrade of software, cameras, etc. That way your original investment extends over a longer period, and there is a dramatic improvement when you get the new version. The 9-point autofocus and 5fps would be great compared to the D60, I think.

According to dpreview the prices of the new lenses will be $599 for the 17-85mm and $799 for the 10-22mm lens. They should both be a big improvement over the 300D/20D kit lens.

I guess they better be good! Although the 28-135IS lens I bought from bhphotovideo.com for $409 had a retail price of $599, so the 17-85 EF-S will probably priced right once it hits the streets. $600-800 for the 10-22 is way up there for a non-L lens, though. I could buy a 70-200 F4L for that kind of money!

$799 is pretty steep but as the focal length shortens the price goes up quickly! 10mm is a damn wide lens.
