I don't have much experience with any JVC cameras, but when I looked into the hard drive cameras about a year ago, the video's bitrate was much, much lower than any of the Hi8 tape base ones.
It depends on what you're using it for, but for me the higher quality for the price and the ability to swap tapes for new capacity beat out the hard drive base cameras.
