Yeah I really like it. Its my first true digital SLR, I was using an old Olympus SLR that was made in the late '70's and it took a beating, hope the D40 can hold up like it could but I'm definitely more careful with the D40.
I was a photojournalist for fifteen years and a "has been" now for twenty years. I've got an F3T HP "chrome" with motordrive and FM in almost new condition and many AI lenses. I'm thinking that a switch over to digital might inspire me to get back into it (for fun, not money this time) but I just haven't kept up on what's going on. Might be a dumb question but it shows how far "out of it" I am... Can the AI lenses be used on the new digital cameras? I'd sell or trade the camera bodies, of course, for a high end Nikon digital- is that the D80?
Thanks for any comments.
i'm a professional photo retoucher but, i "dabble" very lightly in photography. i too have the little D 40. great little camera though. i have the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses and the SB 400. suits me well. i get so tired of working on photo retouches all day that it's hard to take my own pictures sometimes. so the little set up i have is perfect for me.
I don't know if the older AI lenses will work with the D80, I don't think you'll be able to meter with them on the D80. If your looking for higher end Nikon the D300 sounds like it might be a better choice. Did a quick search and seems like it will work the the older AI lenses.
I did a lot of research before getting into the digital SLR realm, and a couple sites helped me. I'd suggest checking them out.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/compatibility.htm - This is Ken Rockwell's review of the D300. I guess some people don't like him (atleast thats what I've read on some other sites) but he seems to give honest reviews.
While the D300 is a better choice than the D80, the D3 might be the best (if you really want high end). Of course, you'd be paying high end.
What is better for one person isn't necessarily best for another. You'll need to do some research & go out & hold a few. How a camera feels is very important, as I'm sure you know.
I love my D200 & I'm sure that a D300 is better in many ways for me it's not worth the cost to upgrade. A lot depends on if you want a full frame DSLR or are content with the aps sized sensor. The D3 is a fine camera & without a doubt Nikon's best at this time, but it's a pro model & as such it is built heavy like a tank. Much heavier that an F3T.
Now that there are new models out some of the previous versions can be had at a pretty good price. I'd look at the D300 or D200 & if that is a bit more than you want check out a D80. Although I do have to say that on the other end of the Nikon spectrum the D40 is a fun little DSLR that travels everywhere with me & it's very inexpensive.

Coolpix 5700 (my first digital camera, not counting the Fujifilm DS-7)
D70s
AF 50mm f/1.8 (will replace with f/1.4 eventually)
AF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 (my starter lens from 15 yrs ago)
AF 70-210mm 'D' f/4-5.6 (Ken Rockwell likes this lens, but I don't; push-pull zoom is awkward for me)
AF 18-35mm D f/3.5-4.5 (sorta regret buying this lens)
I really don't like the DX format, so I'm hoping Nikon will have FX format for the mid-level camera in a couple of years.
I also have a Mamiya RB67 that I used for weddings. Boy, do I hate weddings.

I would like to get a good wide angle lens for my D80. My camera has an wide angle extension lens that screws on to my 28-70mm lens but I find the pictures to be kinda blurry and grainy compared with a straight wide angle that I borrowed once. Any recommendations from other Nikonites??
