Anyone here have the cold start chatter issue and had the repair done at MAG? If so did they take your word for it or did it have to be demonstrating the issue when you took the car in? My wife's 08 Clubman S has had the chatter 3 or 4 times since we've owned it. There would be no way to demonstrate it to the service guys though as the problem is a) rare and b) goes away after driving for a few minutes.
I had mine performed at MAG, but my Mini was making the noise when I pulled in the service garage and they noted it. I also provided the SIM number. Maybe take a recording of the noise and provide it to them when you take it?
I do recall them saying they have been performing that particular repair alot recently, so maybe just give then a call and see what they say?
Short of it. Took it in, sat overnight, Ray called back the next afternoon...said they didnt hear anything. Went got it back (probably shouldnt have, but couldnt reach Bill Langford in time), and this morning it made pleeeenty of sound after parking on a very slight downslope of my apt garage. Recorded it, and Im pretty sure Bill will return my unhappy voicemail i left last night.

Yes...please update us. Our Clubman needs to go in for servicing and I'd like to get the cold start chatter issue taken care of at the same time. I've been meaning to capture a video of it on our camera as backup in case they don't hear it after its been parked over night.

Yes. do that. Also if its bad probably dont puss out like i did and take your car back lol.
here is the SIM 11 02 07. Not a bad idea to know what your talking about.... they do not seem to at all.. at least Ray and some other guy (Mike? maybe) didn't. Also...based on other threads.. MAKE SURE YOUR OIL IS FULL, and MAKE THEM PARK IT ON ANY DOWNWARD SLOPE (front down)...not sure where they had parked mine... I wish i made sure
From oldMGguy Yep - the root cause of the timing chain rattle on "cold starts" is a $43 part. Here's a link to the timing chain system http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=MF73&mospid=50031&btnr=11_3924& hg=11&fg=25
The defective hydraulic piston (part #4) is the "muscle" that holds the tensioner (#3) against the timing chain. Internal seals are supposed to hold the extended piston in it's last position at shutdown, but defective units will "collapse" back to a retracted state over time (6+ hours or more). It takes up to 2 minutes of engine run time to purge the piston of air and reposition it for the correct chain tension. During that purge, we get to hear the slack chain whanging against the assorted guides, rails, and sprockets, doing rapid wear in the process. Parts #1, 2, 3, 6, and 11 will rapidly deteriorate in a surprisingly short time during the start-up "rattle".
Not all MCS have this problem. but there's enough owner complaints world-wide for BMW to issue repair bulletin SIM-11-02-07, and for Consumer Reports to rescind their recommendation for the '07-09 Cooper "S" model.
Basically itll cost MAG/MINI a lot more if it keeps being 'ignored'
I might even just call Bill Langford to schedule: 614.889.2571 x4224

Ok Bill called. Mentioned that they should have let me keep the loaner some more and that he'd check my production date... seemed to really think it was an 07-early 08 thing. Im pretty certain im a Oct-Nov 08 production... supposedly this issue affects up to Nov 08...
I told him I recorded the noise this morning, and tried to make it apparent that this (most likely) $43 part would be better caught early before it costs (them/mini/ect) $1200+
Awaiting his next call...
EDIT: Got the call back. Next Thursday they will be changing the parts. My 09 is a 9/08 Build (just before the Nov cutoff) and he said it sounded like I knew what I was talking about and that they do not need to replicate it. Now that is what i'm talkin' about! In the end it just feels good knowing that they believe me, as I am pretty darned mechanically inclined. They won't lend me thier tools and garage space however (he did jokingly offer lol).
Hopefully itll be fixed once and forall, though for some thats not always the case. I was just as concerned with cracking a factory built engine open, and Bill assured me of thier techs skill and that he wants a job-well-done in the end. Thanks for stepping up MAG.

Reason: UPDATED
My car is a Jan '09 build and the chain tesnioner had failed in it - they replaced it with no qualms and I haven't heard a bit of noise since - over 10K miles now.
It's not just the 07's and '08's.....

Why would you leave an unhappy voicemail? if they didn't hear it ...they didn't hear it. Leave it with them again..it's not like you get the death rattle everyday, it comes and goes.
Ok dropped mine off at 730am yesterday. Ray called at about 245pm to say it was all done! Replaced everything so hopefully ill never hear it again. Didnt hear anything this morning, but its warmer our now.
Overall im glad MAG stepped up and took care of it. I owe Bill a thank you call.
on a side note what makes it even more rewarding having your clean, smooth running S back, was the Dirty dirty Justa-cooper loaner I was given lol. Its like the anti-road-rage car.... when you wanna get mad and get around someone, you really miss the turbo haha.
I had a Justa-Clubman loaner earlier this week. I loved the extra room, M.A.D. loved that it was an auto, but I'm not sure I could live without the extra pep. No offense to any of the Non S owners out there.
It IS an adjustment going from my S to momma's Non S Clubbie.
but I get used to it pretty fast , also the sport mode on the auto helps perk it up some to ease the transition
I'm scheduled for my repairs on Monday. Bill asked that I make a recording of the noise if I could. I uploaded 3 short videos to YouTube demonstrating the problem.
Hopefully this will suffice in case it does not make the noise for them while it's at MAG. I would say these videos show a fairly mild case of the rattling noise. It's been worse on a few occasions.
