I got a snail-mailing from MINI Winnipeg today, an invitation to "Sunday Cruise 2", from 12 to 3pm on Oct. 22. Guess the only traffic cones we'll see will be in construction zones .

Bucky and I plan to attend...hope to see y'all there!

FINALLY!

Well, the event has changed the original plans but I'm sure Ernie and the gang will put on a good time! I really hope the THIRD JCW MINI in Winnipeg attends!

THE DETAILS:

WHEN: Sunday, October 22nd
TIME: 12:00 noon at MINI Winnipeg (starting) to 3:00 p.m.
Cruise from MINI Winnipeg around town "MINI train" to lunch at the Pony Corral on Grant Avenue. There will be prizes etc. and some fun games
!

The MMMC will be holding the next event in November, possibly in conjuncture with the Winnipeg Sports Car Club/Porsche Club here in town. It will be a TSD rally. Iceman & I will be in contact with some of the folks out in Gimli for next year when we hope to have a summer cruise out to the sports car racing there...lunch...hot laps in our MINIs! I did some hot laps this summer for the first time ever...SO fun!

Very funny!

Congrats on your win today Karl! I would almost give a ride in the MINI for a $100 gift cert!

Info on the November 25th event will be forthcoming as soon as a starting point is determined.

Hi JCWGurl,

Have you seen my pix from today? Too bad the weather was so crummy...

It was neat to meet the folks who now own my old faithful Indi Blue '02 Launch Edition MINI today! The gift cert was a real shock, I didn't expect to win anything.

Not sure what the heck I'm going to do with my 3rd MINI travel coffee mug and baseball hat...(maybe I'll let you have them as prizes for future MMC events )

A TSD rally in the (likely) cold and (possible) snow of November in Winnipeg sounds like a real challenge! It could well become known as the day a bunch of MINIs and Porsches called *CAA on their cell phones...

The bad news is, I'm going to have to recruit a navigator or stay home...my wife has to work that day... (On the other hand, maybe that's good news ... I have heard Rally driving can be hard on a marriage...)

Looks like you had a great turn out for the event. Nice to see pics from the Peg.

Heres a pic from last weekends Poker run we did down in the Ozarks.

Those are some great pics Karl! Maybe we can help you to find a navigator for the event or perhaps there will be another driver who is short and we can pair you guys up! It is not imperitive to bring a MINI or a Porsche to the event...you can drive anything! (although I will give preferrence to the MINI drivers ).

A navigator is really a must have for a TSD rally so if you are unable to find one let me know and I'll do my best to recruit one for you!

Briget (yes yes, I know I'm signed in as ICEMAN - sorry Mark! )

It was fun...that's what counts.

Thanks for sharing your picture from the Ozarks. Your trees still have green leaves on them? Ours are mostly bare, and we had a few snowflakes in the air at various points. (If anyone had asked, that would be our excuse for not seeing the "no left turn" sign that we all violated at one point on our route...reduced visibility, didn't see it, sorry, Constable ).

My recollection of the Ozarks from a family vacation visit when I was a kid was that there were lots twisty roads that would be great fun to drive in a MINI. The routes my Dad drove us on there weren't much fun for me in the back seat of a 1960 Rambler (I got car sick a couple times in one stretch).

So what's a "Poker run"?

Lots of hilly twistie roads.

A poker run is where you have a route to follow with stops on the way, stores, gas stations, that sort of thing. When you get to each stop, you pick a card.

You have more than 5 stops, so you pick your 5 best cards to try and get the best poker hand.

I plan to have a MMMC poker run in the spring - hopefully we can get a good group together and do a charity run. Mark & I participate in the cruise for MS and they charge $5 a card (buy as many as you like) and there are some great prizes for the best hands. When the time comes for us to have one here I'd like to do something charitable...it's nice to give back to the community

Lotsie & GCWGurl...

OK, now that I know what a Poker Run is, it sounds very cool.

I already donate a good chunk of my income to various favourite charities, but if "Bucky" and the MMMC can help me do more for others, I'm game.

I guess one problem might be finding agreement on which charity to support with an event. For example, a very generic charity like United Way or Red Cross might get more participation than one targeted to a more limited (or politically sensitive) group such as cancer victims, GreenPeace, or Canadian Forces families who had a loved one killed or wounded or disabled in Afghanistan.

Briget, if you need help with getting stuff like this rolling, please let me know sooner rather than later.

I agree that the choice of which charity might be tough for some. I would not want to donate ANY money that was undesignated to the United Way. I worked in the non-profit industry for some time and know some charity's dirty little secrets (or not so secret ...just no one ever asks). For example - the United Way is completely funded by the taxpayers and above most other charities their staff are paid FAR more and their waste is just CRAZY since they do not have to report their efficiency like some others. Other charities - like the one I worked for - run at over 90% efficiency meaning that LESS THEN 10% is used to actually RAISE the funds. 90% is commendable. Someone does pay for those glossy brochures and "donor recognition" books, fancy mail pieces and big United Way building.

I personally would love to see any funds raised go to the Children's Hostpital Foundation here in Winnipeg or the like.

Hmm...you raise some interesting points here...

I can't argue with your experience and/or logic.

Personally, I would really be in favour of MMMC event donations going to almost any good charity that does zero telemarketing...those "Caller ID blocked" phone calls I get all the time really tick me off. Recently, I have started to "break the script" the person on the other end is using. (Off-topic rant follows)

"Well, that's very interesting, I'd like to learn a lot more. What is your web address? Oh, you don't have a web site? Well, then today is your lucky day, because you happen to be talking to a professional web designer..."

Or (if they do have a web site) ..."OK, great, hang on...<clickety sounds while I type in the URL>... <gasp!> Oh wow, that is one of the most disfunctional web sites I have ever seen! It does not even validate to W3C coding standards! I can help you fix that..."

If they haven't hung up on me by then, I tell them what I charge per hour and offer to give them a free estimate :-). Unfortunately, I have not landed any new web design customers that way yet, but I think I will keep trying....

Fortunately, I don't really NEED any new web design customers...and I wouldn't stoop to help any organization that does telemarketing to raise funds. Telemarketers are (best described by language not suitable for a family audience)...and only one notch above e-mail spammers on my "if I could push a button to launch a photon torpedo, what would be its target?" list.

(rant over)

You actually can send that torpedo. If you are annoyed by a telemarketer who won't quit after a polite "Sorry, I'm not interested", just mumble something encouraging and put the phone down without hanging up. In most cases, they cannot cut the connection, and are forced to physically stand up and go find a supervisor who can reset the line. This wastes valuable time, and if more people did it, might result in much less aggressive behaviour on the part of people who don't care if they waste YOUR time.

Well, I am still minus one navigator, but the good side of that is I can volunteer to help on the organizational side. You know, like man a check point, take pix, whatever. I'm a newbie at this, so just let me know what you need

Just as well this event seemed to fall through the cracks, I would have had to vanish at the last minute. My Nov 25th was occupied for much of the day at my workplace trying to fix a failing application server.
