JCW Sound Kit (R50) Sound Pipe Filter Element removal

Hi,

I've had the JCW Sound Kit on my Cooper for about 6 months. I want a little more sound in the cabin, and wondered if anyone has information on whether or not it would be safe to remove the Sound Pipe Filter Element.

It's Part D here:

http://motoringfile.com/howto/jcw%20mc_soundkit.pdf

I'm not sure removing that filter will result in more sound, but wanted to make sure it's safe before I try. I assume it is fairly safe as the next stop on the sound pipe is the intake's filter.

I also have a sound kit, and would not recommend removing the Sound Pipe Element. It is also an air filter, and removing it would allow dirt into the engine.

What I would like to know is where a spare could be gotten. Those filters are made by BMC, and the BMC web site does not list that item.

MINI sells it. According to RealOEM, Part# 13720400738 and $58 . I bought a set of Sound Kit filters a couple of years ago and I don't remember it being that high!

They're spendy, for sure. The large filter is something like $98. Oh well!

BTW, I didn't discover this until later. How about using BMC's own filter cleaning kit instead of buying expensive new filters from MINI.

http://www.amazon.com/BMC-Air-Filter...=315MC678LWK3S

only $13

Don't get rid of that filter, you'll be sucking dirt into your engine.

If you want more sound check out our WAY/DDM intake

I have not been replacing the filters. I have been cleaning, and oiling. I have not gotten the BMC wash/oil kit, but have been using the K&N wash/oil kit. Don't know if it is any different. Maybe someone can answer if it makes a difference to use the BMC or K&N wash/oil kit.

Hi MiniMacster,

How often are you cleaning your JCW Sound Kit filters, and at what milage, approximately, did you do your first cleaning?

Many thanks!

Matthew

I clean my filters about every 5,000 miles. My idea of buying spares is to speed up the process by having the second set ready to just swap out and go.

question matthew-w. What year is your Cooper? The pre 2005 Coopers require a software change. Mine is a 2004. I installed the components myself, but have not had the EDU software mod. I was wondering what difference it makes.

MiniMacster,

Morning!

Thank you for the info on your cleaning schedule. Also, great idea about having two sets. Helpful! Did you buy your second set from the dealer (I might have missed the answer in one of your previous posts)?

In answer your question,

I've got a 02/2006 build. I ordered the JCW S/K through Schomp MINI and had them install it. Great experience all around. Erik (who is now in the shop) and Devin were my SA's, if you think it worthwhile contacting them with any technical questions.

As far as the ECU remapping, I'd say it's requisite.

My Cooper had a slight dip or lag coming off the line with the "stock" ECU programming. The temptation was to press the accelerator gently at first _and_ feather the clutch to avoid it, which would provide a smother off-the-line sensation.

The idea behind the JCW S/K remapping is similar to any ECU tune, to provide a more aggressive throttle response.

True to the promise, after the JCW S/K remapping that lag/dip has largely been remedied. It still exists to some degree, but it's so much better that I consider it mandatory for someone with the JCW S/K installed.

Hope that helps!

Matthew
