08 MCSa JCW question

I thought that having the JCW stage 1 installed on the 08 MCSa would allow me to start in 1st gear instead of always starting in 2nd...I find that in sport mode with the manual shifting mode, it always defaults to 2nd gear at the stoplights. Is that what it is suppose to do?
Thanks for any info that anybody may have to correct this issue.

In manual shifting mode mine always starts in 2nd gear from a full stop with or without the sport button engaged. As far as I know, this is the way they've designed it though i'm not sure why. I don't have the JCW kit, but I imagine the kit would be no different.

I usually downshift at the light, but that gets annoying. I wonder if Mini could reprogram the ECU to bring us down to first on a stop?

when you are in manual shift mode just "downshift" by pushing lever or paddles one click DOWN while awating the light to change. That will give you a first gear start, Hang on..and watch out for torque steer.

Even in manual shift mode, it defaults to a secon gear start unless prompted otherwise by YOU.

My car was one for the first auto trans MCS cars to get the JCW stage 1 but I recently had to get a new tach requiring re-programming. Tech said the computer requested "remove or leave in place" the JCW stage 1 software. He left it as I would have desired. Not sure what is up BUT my car is way better NOW. Its an 07..did they do something new to the operating software of MCSa cars..the difference is quite noticable. Smoother engine performance, quicker, crisper shifts, etc. even in non-sport mode.

I have to call the tech and check this out...its GOOD.

Trust me...if my wife was not driving the MINI on occasion, I would be driving a factory JCW , too. I test drove it and really liked it. In the meantime, my current car is running quite well.

I was just curious as to what is involved in a Stage 1 ? Is it software , intake and exhaust? Where does one get this?

its all of the above. Must be purchased and installed by dealer. Figure $2100. plus 2 hours labor on the high end. A bit lower if you can get a better price on parts.

Talked to tech today. He was surprised but he did say I test drove your car and it runs very strong. He said they do have new downloading equipment and software but he did not think anything had been changed in the software that he was aware of. Whatever..I am not complaining.

Yes, the Aisin always downshifts to 2 for us space-cases that cant remember to do so (much the same way it wont upshift to a higher gear if the rpms are too low) but U can always paddle or stick down to 1 and start that way if U wish. and like another poster said: watch the torque steer if U launch from 1. It's pretty brutal

PS since it got hot out and Im running the A/C I find it better to start in M1. In M2 it bogs down.
