Well i havent even got my car yet so i figured i'd not bother Mr. Whanlen with this yet, but ive seen alot of nice Whalen Machine shifters on here so i just wanted to know if it'd be possible to get a knob like this made:
I know the metal sucks atm i suck at metal materials, but im pretty happy with the paint shader.
He can do the engraving of the flag on top, but no color. He does have a couple different finishes like polished or brushed. I don't think he can put the etching that far down the sides for the shift pattern either.
goin440 is correct.
The engraving is no problem; but I may not be able to engrave quite as far down as in the picture. Do you know exactly what "latitude" the bottom circle is on? If you can tell me that, I'll be able to tell you how close I can get.
No colors from me. I decided long ago that I don't want to get into any painting of the knobs; sorry!
If I want to play around with possible designs, what's the best program/format to use?
Also, Whalen, how well (or even IF) can you do asymmetric shapes? For example, I'm thinking of a design like the pic attached (forgive my lack of graphic skills ) without color of course
What do you think? Too much detail to shrink down enough for a shift knob?
Thanks for any comments / input

I can't speak for Doug but generally he can do a fairly detailed design. The one he did for me turned out surprisingly well. I've seen a lot of designs that had good detail. Best thing is to email your design to him and he'll let you know if he can take care of you. Great to work with!
I can program directly from DXF files; but I often call on a great graphics man (Craig Burkett, of Evergreen Graphic), who can convert other formats to DXF.
I pay him for his services, so the knobs cost slightly more in those cases.
Symmetry is not a requirement; and I don't see any problem with your design at all.
An example of non-symmetrical detail that is possible...
It's not easy to tell from this angle, but the lower bit falls to about the lowest latitude that Doug can do. It's definately the coolest mod I can think of.
Peace,
Scott

I like to keep everything inside a 1 5/8" diameter.
Does that include any "Rings"? For instance in this pic:
Would it be possible to have a bead finished knob, but with a brished ring on the "Outside" of the 1 5/8" circle?
Kind of like the image below (minus the yellow of course) where the outer ring is brushed and the rest of the knob is bead finished. (Am I making sense?)

I can't engrave that low when the knob is in my milling machine.
I would have to engrave the ring with the knob in my lathe, and that's kind of tricky to do after the knob is assembled.
