Driving lights the "old school" way . . .

Somehow, the proportions of the factory driving lights never seemed right to me. So, I've been looking at different combinations since I bought the first MINI in 02. It finally hit me a few months ago and so the quest began . . . Lucas Flamethrowers! The big, heavy, chrome lights with clear lenses and that cool, ah, button, (yeah, that's the ticket) in the center of the light. No slim line computer shaped optics here. This is your basic fat parabolic bowl made to focus a pencil beam . . .

I used the MINI MADNESS brackets and wired a relay into the high beams. Pretty standard stuff. I know I won’t use ‘em much, but I just like the look. These may be the original 50’s bling.

Pretty good Saturday project. Now, off to region band concert!

Those are absolutely stunning!!!! Great work.
I'm on the search right now for some driving lights, but may end up doing the exact opposite of yours, a small rectangle (just gotta be different). But looking at yours makes me waver yet again
Will you be taking a pic a night to show us their awesomeness? That would be cool, hint hint.
Annette

I'm leaving for Clover Land in the morning, I'll play with night pictures when I get home. By todays standard, they aren't very bright and have a very concentrated beam. No halogen or anything trick, just incandescent bulbs. Where new lights might be a million or more candle power, these are in the 1/4 million range. Its 50's technology at it's best!

Ah, Flamethrowers! Now you're talking!

Now if you could just get Xenons with the old Lucas Tri-Bar base... remember those?

Back when I had my Healey I knew someone that had the Lucas head lamps that you pictured. Just beautiful. They threw a nice light pattern as well.

Check the bulbs, they may be the std 45W tungsten. You can replace them with 55W Halogen for more intense light, or if you're adventerous, bet you could find 100W With the right bulbs the "pencil" beam SLRs have a very long reach.

Try www.lbcarco.com
170-510H
HALOGEN 12V 55W P22S FOG/DRIVING SINGLE FILAMENT ALSO FOR LUCAS FLAMETHROWER & LUCAS SFT576 IE: MGA, TF & TD LATE TC
CVB - 12V
Retail $32.00 Our Price $26.00

I'm partial to Lucas....but the 700 SLR & SFT are a bit much for a new MINI...but just perfect for a classic.... And at about 3' in front they make excellent handwarmers...

Now THOSE are nipples....

Thanks for the tip on the bulbs . . . Those lights on your classic look great! You are right that they would look kinda funnny on a new MINI.

No, but that's one of the things that makes our visits so much fun.

John, if I ever get another big Healey (had a '58 100-6), it will have those headlights.

Very nice, UJ. Too bad you missed the meeting. It would have been cool to check them out up close.

I know, I really wanted to see Tori's car. The good news is that the all-region band concert was great and the Munchkin seemed to enjoy it more this year. She did good, and made all-region every year of high school. Can't ask for more than that. She is so looking forward to college . . .
