Sunroof Tinting

I'm a new MCS owner living in Texas and thinking about having my sunroof tinted. Window tint installers are willing to do the sunroof tint, but they warn that there is a possibility of the sunroofing cracking because the sunroof is in direct sunlight so much of the time. Is this something that I should really worry about? Or, is it just the installers being cautious. Has anyone living in the southern US had a tinted sunroof cracked?

I have not heard that one before. I had mine done last November. No problems so far here in Houston.

I've never seen a MINI sunroof that wasn't Tinted from the factory. Is your sunroof clear?

I've never seen a sliding moonroof that was not tinted. The tint on the sunroof on the mini isn't that dark so maybe he's going to have it limo tinted. We ordered a cooperflag to cover our sunroof.

It came with the standard MINI sunroof tint, but as Traveler pointed out it gets pretty hot in Texas in the summer. I thought about a roof graphic or sunroof graphic and that's not really what I want--I like the way my MCS looks without any roof graphics.

Traveler: Does the window tininting help? Do you still get enough light through the sunroof? What percentage tint did you get?

What will the tinting guys charge you? Cooperflags sell the solid colors are well so if you like the black they have a sunroof cover for $159.00. In their gallery, they have some photos how the decals effect the light coming through the sunroof.

Yup I got the same advice and warning here in S. Nevada. I was told that, they (the tinting shop) that did my windows wouldn't do the sunroof. It seems that tinting the inside causes heat to build up excessively in the glass. Further I was told they had several instances where the glass had shattered not by itself but when hit or otherwise exposed to a minor shock like when exposed to a sudden splash of water. However a soultion is at hand with a sunroof cover from www.cooperflags.com. My experience is that installation of the cover resulted in a significant reduction in solar gain and with it installed my jet black 04 MCS keeps it's cool even during our present 105 degree days. I know this sounds like a shamless plug for Cooper Flags but many other participants in this site will also say good things about Matt and his products............................mgg.

I got the darkest stuff they had for the sunroof. I went lighter on the windows. I don't remember the numbers. This was the same outfit that was tinting for Momentum MINI and BMW. It's definitely dark, but enough light for me. When I want sun I open it up. I may yank it off some day and do a CooperFlag. For now my money is going for performance stuff.

Can't wait for fall.

I got my front widows tinted with 35%, rears with 20% and my sunroof with 15%. The mini comes with a 15% tint on the sunroof and with the addtion of another 15% mine is now 2.25% (15% of 15). The place I go to know a lot about tinting and he said that it will only crack if the glass is tempered or double paned, and the Mini has neither on the sunroof. It is impossible to see in from the top but the visibility from the inside is only slightly darker. I think it is the best choice because is really helps keep the car cooler in the sun and you can still see out.

P.S. with my sunglasses on and the mess screen closed I can look directly at the sun through my sunroof. It completely cuts the uv rays.

Sunroof tinted

I tinted mine. It makes my car appear darker when I want. I cannot really say if it makes a huge difference as far as keeping the heat out!

Did mine too here in Florida. Installer is a friend of mine and he didn't mention any possible problems with tinting a MINI sunroof.

I'm in Florida and 4 months with limo tint on em as well as decals (perforated from Cooperflags) on the top and no issues whatsoever. I think they are feeding you a line of BS. Who knows they MAY have seen one case of it, but when I asked my tinter who has been titning longer than I have been driving (and I'm 31, um....er 18 with 13 years experience!!!) he said there was nothing to worry about.

Limo Tint

I am in Hawaii, and my tint shop suggested going with the metalic limo tint. You can't see the metalic, it just looks stock, but the interior is much cooler and the amount of light it cuts is just right. I never need to use the sunscreen (forgot it was there!). Absolutely no problems, one of the best things I have done to my Mini.
