DIY Short Throw Clutch Stop

Many of you may have seen or purchased this product from BMS

It replaces the OEM POS clutch stop and helps to eliminate the very excessive length of throw for the clutch pedal. It's a nifty, very inexpensive product that really does wonders for any of the driving you do in your car, be it track or street. They sell for 10 dollars and that's great but...

for just under 6 bucks at just about any auto parts store you can buy these:

and make this

I believe I used like 6 washers. With 7 the car wouldn't start (due to some clutch engagement sensor I must assume). It fits great, doesn't move a bit and IF it breaks I have an extra fender clip to replace it already. Works like a charm and you don't have to wait on shipping.

I'm sure someone else has done this, and their may be another thread on it already but I decided to through it up anyways, I took the pictures I may as well go all the way through with it right? Hopefully it'll help someone else out, happy motoring.

Has anyone tried this mod on a 1st generation MINI yet? It looks like it is feasible looking at the photo of my R53 clutch stop. The photo was taken from the floor board straight up under the dash. The stop is the silver piece with the black circle in the middle. Sorry it's so blurry, it's was hard to take the photo. It is not on the firewall like it looks on the R56 above.

I hate the clutch in these. One of my biggest complaints. Might have to give this a try.

Same. I've owned it almost 2 years and can't find the engagement point! Will be trying this.

As a new driver to manual cars I was always told that if I did not have the clutch pushed 'all the way to the floor' I could cause damage/slip, is there actually that much play in the clutch that these are necessary?

Okay everyone, bought the parts on the way home last night. Took ~12 seconds for this modification. I used 6 washers and it only sticks out about 1/2". It seems better, but I can't tell if it's just placebo, or if it's actually better. Also, the photo posted above seems like way more than 6 washers!

There is excessive travel with the clutch pedal on these. This eliminates the gap.

Is there anyway on the R56 MCS to adjust the clutch engagement point? Back in my Mustang days there was an aftermarket adjustable quadrant (part of the cable assembly) you could adjust to driver preference. Most of us moved the engagement point closer to the floor. The Camaro I had used an hydraulic unit that adjusted the clutch to a factory set point, there wasn't a modification method available with this unit.

Currently our MCS engagement point is way out on the end of travel. Like the last two to three inches.

No adjustments available, and without replacing the whole set up there I don't see how to add anything to create adjustability. And if you could you would just be adding complexity and more parts to break. Let us know if you find something, and although I am very happy with mine as it is I would consider something that moves the engagement point closer to the floor.

This clutch stop does a perfect job since the OEM lets the clutch go too far, 2-3" further than needed for full disengagement. Simple, easy, highly recommend this mod. I bought the BMS setup, but the OP is correct that their kit is nothing more than what he made himself. I just happen to like the felt washers with the BMS so I recommend it as well and am happy with my purchase. And yes, it took a few days to adjust to the shorter clutch movement, but it is much faster to shift. Now two years on with the BMS installed I test drove a 2007 model for sale at the dealer and was stunned at the long travel! I really had gotten used to the shorter setup. It felt like I was pushing down and then the pedal arc'ed back up into the firewall? Way too much travel.

Any chance of part numbers?

Edit: Specifically for the fender retainer

I don't think you really need a part number. I walked into my local auto parts store and asked for the fender retainers. There was only one size. I bought those and went to Home Depot a bought a dozen washers that fit over the fender retainer. Have not installed them yet (115 degrees in the garage) but will as soon as it gets into the double digit weather.

The one thing that pisses me off about my CMS is the clutch travel in it! I had a 2015 as a loaner once and the thing catches 1" from the floor! Not 4" like our N18s.
