Blackout beltline help

I want to blackout the beltline on my r56 but not sure the best way to go about that. I've been hearing electrical tape but I'm worried that the Florida heat will cause some issues. What about Plasti dip?

Seeing as it is a lease, even though I will most likely buy it out afterwards, I need to be able to revert everything back just in case I decide not to.

Electrical tape won't be tacky enough either I dont think.
Detroit Tuned offers a kit that is UV resistant and nice and sticky. http://www.detroittuned.com/detroit-...-blackout-kit/

Or there is 3M tape that you can find that is similar.

So you wouldn't recommend Plasti Dip? I already have some im going to use for other parts. Or is just buying the kit the best bet?

For the belt line, I think it would be overly time consuming. Masking the area around the entire MINI, then spraying several coats of plasti dip. And with each coat having to dry in between, seems like a pita to me. Rather just use the tape...clean/wipe down and then apply the tape. Cut where needed and that's it. One pass and your done. But that's just my opinion

I tried the tape and couldn't get the ends to look right. Ended up doing plastidip and it looks great. Around the mirrors is a bit of a PITA. The plastidip should peel and scrub off no problem before you return the car. One tip is to remove the masking tape when the plastidip is half way dry. If you wait until it is all the way dry the plastidip will stretch and not come apart cleanly.

I ordered the kit from outmotoring but was not a fan of the gloss tape so I went to a sign show and had flat black vinyl cut into 5/8th strips. Worked great.

I got the pre/cut betline kit too. It's 3M and matches the width of the chrome line pretty well but there are inevitable spaces. The way I did it was doing whole sections at a time without cutting until I reached the end of that section. You leave a little extra on the end you started from and follow it while pressing into place when it's in a good position. You can even lay it down and pull it up a few times without messing up the stickiness. I did it this way and have had it looking good for about 6 months now without any issues.

Apparently it rained dirt yesterday

Good luck!

Got some chrome showing on mine so I ordered more and I'm gonna redo everything that I'm not happy with. Hopefully the old stuff comes off without a fight.

How's the Outmotoring beltline kit holding up in the FL sun and heat?
About to pull the trigger and figured I'd ask around.

Mine has held up for 5-6 years and still looks good. Half the time it's garaged, other half in the sun. Kinda like black electrical tape, but the right size and better adhesive. Takes time and patience to apply though.

I've been working on my beltline this morning using the Outmotoring Matte tape. I don't know if I got a defective roll, but the very edges of the tape have white specs. On my R60 I can't stretch it at all or it gets too narrow and the chrome shows. As of now I've only done the hatch and the rear quarters. The hatch looks terrible so I'll have to redo it. The quarters look "okay" but not great. I think I'll use this roll as a practice application and order another one once I get past the nuances.

I'll go out and take pics shortly and post them so I can get your opinions.

Be sure to peel off the clear 'transfer' film that covers the black tape once it is installed. The clear film helps protect the black part from getting scuffed during installation. If you wait too long it will harden and become difficult to remove.

I've picked and picked and can't seem to find a coating over the black matte tape. What am I missing?

I'm getting adjusted to placing the tape on my beltline and it's looking much better. I only need to redo the boot.

Love the look!

Thanks,
Lisa

It could be a defect in the material if you are seeing some speckling as mentioned. If so please let us know and we can replace it.

I re-applied some of my beltline tape this morning. It looks much better. Close up it has it's flaws, but from a slight distance it looks pretty darn good. And I've still got at least 10 feet of leftover tape if I need to redo a section.

Thanks Outmotoring!

Lisa

@KeziaPurrs - is that the matte finish from outmotoring that you used? I'm having a hard time deciding what I want to do on my '11 Horizon Blue.

Good morning! Yes, I used the matte black. It's not a perfect solution. Bc no matter how meticulous I was there are still some areas where chrome peeks out. However it looks much better than the chrome. I'm eventually going to have it plasti dipped, for now I took the cheaper route.

I used this tape also and I do like the look, but think I will be going with plastidip in the future and pick a color.
