Old to new Shift Knob...

I have a 2002 R53 and the shift knob is looking a little worn.

I purchased another Mini shift knob with the newer design (chrome ring, inset gear numbering)..

To remove the old knob, all you have to do is pull straight up? Will the newer knob fit no problem (no changes to the lock mechanism?)?

If you're referring to the R56 Knob (for the 2007 and newer), you may be out of luck as I think there were some changes to the shift knobs between our R53 and the newer R56 knobs (ie. Whalen's excellent aftermarket shift knobs are different between the R53 and R56's).

Some one correct me if I am wrong. I have 2 R53 knobs (6 speed, black leather) lying around, both essentially flawless. If you want one, just cover the shipping from So. Cal and you can HAVE it for free.

Thanks Dave.

That would suck if I bought a Shift knob that won't fit, even though both styles are essentially OEM.

But on the flip side it would be great if I could grab one the R53 styles off of you.

If you post a pic of your new knob I can tell you if it will or not fit.

To remove the stock one just pull up REAL hard, don't hit the roof with your arm though.

that looks like the newer r56 shift knob
i don't think that will fit at all without some modification
hopefully you can return it or resell it

but you're better off getting a shift knob from DaveC

That is definitely a R56 knob. Won't fit on your car.

do you still have one of these r53 black leather shift knobs laying around? I would love to get one off your hands if possible
